History of the Thomas Hudner (DDG-116)

The modern U.S. Navy (USN) Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer is critical to U.S. law enforcement and the protection of its overseas interests and allies. The collection includes approximately 76 planned ships, of which over 65 have been completed (across three different "flights").

On February 28, 2012, the design for what would become the USS Thomas Hudner was commissioned for construction at the Bath Iron Works in Maine. The keel was laid on November 16, 2015, and it was officially launched on April 23, 2017. It is expected to be in service by the end of 2018.

USS Thomas Hudner fought under the motto "Above All". The warship represents the next step in the development of the Arleigh Burke class, known as "Flying III" (the Arleigh Burke fleet has a total of three flight characteristics), after the U.S. Navy reduced the number of technically loaded destroyer groups in the Zumwalt class .

The warship adopts the same form and function already established by Arleigh Burke destroyer design standards. A unique deck gun and turret is located above the forecastle, and a vertical line of missiles is located aft.

At the rear is the command bridge, which is embedded in the front superstructure. On top of this structure are various critical communications, sensor and radar ports, as well as an exposed mast-like mast. The first set of chimneys are integrated as part of the front superstructure. A gap in the midship separates the forward hopper group from the aft hopper group, which is integrated into the aft superstructure that houses the aft missile hangar as well as the fully operational helicopter hangar. The hangar leads to the aft helideck.

This warship can handle two medium-range naval helicopters (usually 2 Sikorsky MH-60Rs). Will carry 2 x Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB).

Power is provided by 4 GE LM2500 gas turbines, which together produce 100,000 horsepower and help propel the vessel to a speed of 31 knots. Range up to 4,400 nautical miles.

Dimensions include 513 ft overall length, 66 ft beam and 30.5 ft draft. Displacement will be in the range of 9,220 tonnes under full load.

Armament likely to include a 5" deck gun with turret, support for Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) and Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM) weapon types (including Tomahawk cruise missile), with local defense capability 25mm Chain gun, 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) and a small number of heavy machine gun triple torpedo tubes for underwater threats Carry a variety of electronic warfare and deception systems as well as 3D radar and air search equipment and surface search radar, sonar and Drag the sonar array.
