History of USS Milwaukee (LCS-5)

USS Milwaukee (LCS-5) was one of 16 planned "Littoral Combat Ships" designed and built for the United States Navy (USN) . Be. These warships were corvette-like hulls used in near-shore operations -- coastal areas -- in support of Allied forces, primarily during amphibious assaults. The contract for the USS Milwaukee was awarded to the Marinette Marines in Marinette, Wisconsin on December 29, 2010, and the ship was laid on October 27, 2011.

She was commissioned for testing and training on December 18, 2013, and officially launched on November 21, 2015.

At the time of this writing (2022), Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Florida, is conducting active duty combat with the motto "Power - Freedom".

The ship was designed to Liberty-class standards under Lockheed Martin's direction and is a replacement LCS product for the General Dynamics/Austal Independence-class ships. The U.S. Navy has a total of 21 Littoral Combat Ship hulls, with more units planned or currently under construction. However, these designs were not outright successes, prompting the service to move to the new "Constellation-class" frigates detailed elsewhere on this site.

The difference between the two LCS classes is that the Liberty class hull uses a traditional straight-line approach, while the Constellation class uses a trimaran hull design.

When completed, USS Milwaukee will have a displacement of 3,900 short tons, an overall length of 376.2 feet, a beam of 57.4 feet, and a draft of 14 feetdraft measurements that are critical for onshore operations. to the shore. Installed power includes 2 Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines and 2 Colt Pielstick marine diesel engines for the right balance of fuel efficiency and propulsion power. Includes 4 Rolls Royce water jets for fine maneuvering. The maximum speed attainable under ideal conditions is 45 knots and the range is up to 3,500 nautical miles.

The ship can stay at the station for up to 21 days before being resupplied.

There are 125 crew members on board, of which 50 represent core operational staff. The ship carries EADS TRS-3D C-band, X-band and S-band radars and is equipped with the WBR2000 Electronic Warfare (EW) suite. Hard-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) are also used for boarding and deterrence operations.

Armament includes 1 x 57mm Bae Systems Mk 110 series deck gun, 1 x RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) launcher, 2 x 30mm Mk 44 Bushmaster automatic cannons, 6 x Mark 50 torpedo launchers and 4 x 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) - all of which provide warships with solutions to air, surface, land and underwater threats. A small air force makes up the ship's rotor capabilities, including support for two Sikorsky MH-60R/S Seahawk helicopters as well as the MQ-8 Fire Scout Helicopter drone.

The USS Milwaukee's operational service has so far been plagued by problems: Waves from the wake testing her have damaged at least 40 civilian ships on Chambers Island. In December 2015, she lost motivation on her way from Nova Scotia to San Diego and had to be towed away. A report in February 2016 pointed to a clutch failure.

In 2022, the ship is locked with fully vaccinated crew due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The U.S. Navy is already actively working to phase out previous Liberty-class ships.

However, Milwaukee avoided reservation status mainly because of her participation in ASW technology testing, and her hull also had costly updates/modifications due to the operational experience of previous ships in the series - so she will remain in service.
