History

ROKS Yulgok Yi I (DDG-992) is the second destroyer of the Sejong the Great-class in the Republic of Korea Navy, part of a six-ship plan to modernize the navy's surface fleet. Launched in 2008 and commissioned in 2010, the 7,650-ton warship features a stealth design with a plate side hull, single deck guns, turrets, and a vertical launch system. Its purpose includes anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue missions, supported by Navy helicopters.

Named after philosopher Yulgok Yi I, the destroyer incorporates the Aegis Combat System and AN/SPY-1D radar antennae. As part of the Korean Destroyer eXperimental program, it contributes to enhancing the Republic of Korea Navy's maritime defense capabilities. Weighing 8,500 tons standard and 11,000 tons full load, these destroyers, considered among the largest in the South Korean Navy, participated in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) in 2012 and 2018.

Constructed by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, ROKS Yulgok Yi I represents a significant phase in the South Korean navy's shipbuilding program, geared toward defending maritime areas and establishing a blue-water navy. The ship's participation in RIMPAC reflects the Republic of Korea Navy's commitment to enhancing interoperability among Pacific Rim armed forces for regional stability.
