History of Nazario Sauro (SU)
Nazario Sauro was the lead ship of four destroyers she built for Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy) in the 1920s. Completed in 1926, she served in World War II.
The Sauro class destroyers are enlarged and improved versions of the former Sella class. They have an overall length of 90.16 m (296 ft), a beam length of 9.2 m (30 ft 2 in) and an average draft of 2.9 m (9 ft 6 in).
They drained 1,058 metric tons (1,041 long tons) at standard load and 1,600 metric tons (1,570 long tons) at depth load. Their complement consisted of 8-10 officers and 146 soldiers.
Sauros is powered by two Parsons geared steam turbines, each driving a propeller shaft, and steam is provided by three Yarrow boilers. The turbine is rated at 36,000 hp (27,000 kW) and operates at 31 knots (57 km/h; 36 mph), although Nazario Sauro hits 0.0 km/h at 36.5 knots (67.6 km/h; 42) ) reached 37,000 hp (28,000 kW) during her light sea trials.
These ships carry enough fuel to travel 2,600 nautical miles (4,800 km; 3,000 miles) at 14 knots (26 km/h; 16 mph).
Her main battery consisted of four 120mm guns in two twin turrets in the superstructure, one forward and one rear. The anti-aircraft (AA) defense of the Sauro-class ships is provided by a pair of 40 mm (40 mm) anti-aircraft guns and a pair of 13.2 mm (0.52 in) machine guns. They were fitted with six 533mm torpedo tubes in two triples amidships.
Sauros can also carry 52 mines.
