History of HMS Canopus (1899)

In response to the growing naval threat of Imperial Russia and Imperial Japan to its interests in the Pacific region, the Royal Navy began to create a service entirely dedicated to this operation A new class of battleships of domain design. This became the six-person Canopus class, designed for the rigors of remote operation at home.

The class is led by HMS Canopus and eventually joined by sisters Glory, Albion, Ocean, Goliath and Vengeance. Ocean and Goliath were killed in World War I in March and May 1915, respectively.

When HMS Dreadnought arrived in 1906, the class was classified as a former dreadnought. The former dreadnoughts inherited the ironclads, but were then superseded by the dreadnought type as the latter lacked key qualities - a unified main battery and a steam-based turbo propulsion scheme.

The Canopus class became the last class of pre-dreadnoughts to be completed anywhere in the world.
