History of the USS Salmon (SS-182)
On March 15, 1938, the Groton Electric Boat Company commissioned the lead ship of her six submarine USS Salmon (SS-182), commissioned. Connecticut. She was assigned to the Pacific, stationed on the West Coast until redeployed to the Philippines during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Salmon emigrated to Australia and patrolled the East Indies, South China Sea and Indochina, and the Philippines sank three ships. After an overhaul on the West Coast of the United States, she patrolled near Japan and sank another ship in the summer of 1943.
The Salmon was damaged in a depth charge as part of the "Wolf Pack" against Japanese shipping in September 1944. Despite the damage, she appeared, charging at the enemy and driving them away. This action earned the submarine the Presidential Unit Award. Due to her age and service, she returned to the Atlantic in February 1945 and spent the remainder of the war refit and trained seamen.
Salmon was decommissioned on September 24, 1945, and scrapped in April 1946.
