HMCS Protecteur (AOR-509)

History

Her Majesty the Queen's Ship of Canada (HMCS) The Protecteur (AOR 509) is the leading Protecteur-class supply tanker in service with the Royal Canadian Navy. She is a member of the Maritime Forces of the Pacific (MARPAC) at CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia. She was built by St.

John's Shipbuilding and Dry Dock in St. John, New Brunswick, and commissioned on August 30, 1969. She was the first Canadian naval unit to hold the title of Protector. However, there are several units, including a base called HMCS Protector.

Protecteur is known for her humanitarian work, and she has also served in wartime, including Operation Friction and Apollo in the Persian Gulf, multinational naval exercises, and as part of INTERFET in East Timor. Operation Apollo was the largest Royal Canadian Navy operation since the Korean War.

In six months, Protecteur sailed more than 50,000 nautical miles (93,000 km; 58,000 mi), delivering more than 150,000 barrels (approximately 20,000 tons) of fuel and 390 pallets of dry cargo to deployed coalition ships. Both the Protecteur and her sister ship, the Preserver, were due to pay off in 2017, but damage from an engine fire on board in 2014 forced the Protecteur to pay off early.

Protecteur retired in a farewell ceremony on May 14, 2015.
