History of the USNS Spearhead (T-EPF-1)
The USNS Spearhead (JHSV-1/T-EPF-1) was the lead ship of the Vanguard-class expeditionary express transport ship operated by the U.S. Navy Military Sealift Commander Department operation. USS Pioneer was named on September 17, 2011.
Like other ships in her class, the Pioneer is modular in design, allowing rapid modification of various equipment within the 20,000-square-foot (1,900-square-meter) bay, depending on the task at hand. The Spearhead is planned for non-combat missions such as: B. Transport of troops or equipment.
Spearhead measures 103 m (338 ft) long, 28.5 m (94 ft) wide and has a draft of 3.83 m (12.6 ft). She can accommodate a crew of 41, but normally 22, as well as bedrooms for up to 150 people and an additional 312 seats for troop transport. It is powered by four MTU 20V8000 M71L engines, each with an output of 9.1 MW (12,200 hp), driving four Wartsila WLD 1400 SR waterjets via ZF 60000NR2H reduction gears.
This allows for a top speed of 43 knots (49 mph) and an operating speed of 35 knots (40 mph). There are also helicopter facilities.
