History of IJN Ryujo
The Ryujo (Japanese: ryujo "Yuelong") was a light aircraft carrier built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the early 1930s. Small and light, built to take advantage of loopholes in the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty, she proved to be top-heavy and only barely stable, and within a year of completion was back in the yard with modifications to address them.
With improved stability, the Dragon City was returned to service and used in combat during the Second Sino-Japanese War. During World War II, she provided air support for operations in the Philippines, Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, and her aircraft participated in the Second Naval Battle of the Java Sea.
During the Indian Ocean raid in April 1942, the airline used its guns and aircraft to attack British merchant ships. Next, Longcheng participated in the Aleutian Islands naval battle in June. She was sunk by a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Battle of the East Solomon on August 24, 1942.
