CNS Huangshi (502) History

The improved Type 056A guided missile frigate serving the modern Chinese Navy (formerly known as "People's Liberation Army Navy" - PLAN) eventually turned around seventy years old Included - in the series of a warship containing an early form of the original Type 056. As of this writing (2020), as many as 44 are in service, with a further 9 under construction.

The ships are also operated outside China by the navies of Nigeria and Bangladesh.

Frigates are an important part of current Chinese naval doctrine, capable of providing a rapid reaction force to patrol its vast coastline. The class is usually assigned to the East Sea Fleet, the North Sea Fleet and the South China Sea Fleet, some of which are stationed in Hong Kong waters.

China Nuclear Yellowstone (502) is a modern 056A type, which was commissioned in 2015 with a rated power of 1,500 tons. She is assigned to the North Sea Fleet and is on active duty at the time of writing (2020).

Frigate types generally have compact dimensions, smaller than a "combat frigate" but larger than a dedicated coastal patrol craft/fast attack craft. This enables such ships to operate near shore, while operating in a "blue water" environment as part of a larger naval force.

Thus, Yellowstone's dimensions include a length of 90 meters, a width of 11 meters and a draft of up to 4 meters.

Due to limited onboard capacity, the crew will be up to a manageable 78 personnel and officers plus a small contingent from the Luftwaffe (supporting one helicopter). The vessel is equipped with a stern helipad to support a utility or anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mid-lift helicopter that can be launched and recovered as needed. The aircraft provides an invaluable ability to see the horizon, supporting sensors and tracking systems on board.

These systems include the 347G Series radar, a bow-mounted sonar unit and a deployable towed sonar array.

Externally, the class features all modern design elements including an unobstructed forecastle, flat bridge section, enclosed mast, flat/shielded smoke funnel and aft hangar/helipad section. The sides of the hull structure are seamlessly integrated with the hull itself, creating an uninterrupted line from the forecastle to the stern edge.

The interior of the warship is powered by 2 x SEMT Pielstick PA6-STC marine diesel engines, stern drives 2 x axles. This gives the vessel a straight sea speed of up to 25 knots at 16 knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles.

CNS Huangshi has a fully modern armament and can defend against almost any threat at sea - whether from the air, sea or below. The warship carries the traditional turret deck gun, a 1 x 76mm AK-176 automatic weapon system that provides a conventional ballistic solution to surface threats and coastal targets. There are 2 x 2 cell launchers supporting the YJ-83 series anti-ship missile (ASM) as well as 8 cell FL-3000N surface-to-air missile (SAM) launchers.

The ship also carries 2 x 30mm automatic guns for close range operations and can attack warships and submarines from long distances through its 2 x 324mm triple torpedo tubes.
