History of the USS Coral Sea (CV-43)
The USS CORAL SEA was the third Midway-class aircraft carrier and the third ship the Navy named in honor of the historic Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 May. The first Coral Sea was CVE 57, later renamed ANZIO.
The second Coral Sea ship was CV 43's sister ship, the Franklin D. Roosevelt, originally named Coral Sea. The ship was renamed after it was launched on May 8, 1945.
USS Coral Sea CVB 43 in service, redesignated as attack aircraft carrier CVA 43 on 1 October 1952, and redesignated as multipurpose aircraft carrier CV 43 on 30 June 1975. After more than 42 years of service, USS Coral Sea was decommissioned and removed from the Navy list on April 30, 1990.
The ship was scrapped on May 7, 1993, making the Coral Sea the largest warship scrapping ever.
