The diplomatic dispute of the Ten Years' War between the United States, Great Britain, and Spain in 1873-1875, known as the "Virginias Incident," prompted the United States The Navy is developing a new class of warships called the Amphitrite class. The panel will be the fifth, although the fifth example, known as the Puritan, was redesigned and finished as a completely new design. The four ships of this class are USS Amphritrite, USS Monadnock, USS Terror and USS Miantonomoh.
All four were completed, in service from 1891 to 1919, and decommissioned and scrapped (none was lost).
USS Miantonomoh (BM-5) secretly laid the keel in 1874, and her funding came under the guise of post-Civil War maintenance monitors. She was launched on December 5, 1876, and enlisted in the United States Navy (USN) on October 6, 1882. By this time, the age of the monitor was over, and the ship proved slow, inaccurate and unstable in rough seas.
Nonetheless, the investment has been made and the USN has officially made it to the upcoming design.
The Miantonomoh was built with a barrel length of 263.1 feet, a beam of 55.4 feet, and a draft of up to 14.5 feet. She transferred 3,990 tons and kept a crew of 150 officers and entered.
The ship was able to progress at close to 10.5 knots, and the range was limited by the on-board coal supply for her steam engine (driving the twin-screw). The ship is well equipped with 2 x 10" (250 mm)/31 caliber beech-loaded main guns, 2 x 10" (250 mm)/34 caliber breech-loaded main guns, 2 x 4" (100 mm) secondary guns , 2 x 6-pounder cannons and (optional) 2 x Hotchkiss cannons.
She was decommissioned in New York on March 13, 1883, to complete the construction work she continued until 1891. That year, she returned to duty on October 27 and spent time up and down the US East Coast. On November 20, 1895, she retired again, this time at Philadelphia Waters.
With the sinking of the USS Maine on March 10, 1898, Miantonomo resumed operations. The final declaration of war with Spain began the Spanish-American War (April-August 1898), which led the U.S. Navy to begin a complete blockade of the island of Cuba, which was then under Spanish rule.
Miantonomoh joined the Navy's deployment on May 5 and remained in that role until the end of the war in Augustthough her operational limitations were obvious, mainly due to limited coal supplies and her short voyage. In 1899, she retired again.
She remained in reserve status until 1906, then served for a time in the Maryland Naval Militia, serving again in April 1907, but was discharged again in December of the same year. She was used as a target ship from December 1915 (her name was subsequently removed from the Naval Register), and her remains were sold as scrap in 1922.
