History

The Saildrone unmanned surface vehicle family consists of autonomous vessels developed in the United States for ocean research, hydrographic mapping, maritime surveillance, and naval missions. The family has expanded from small wind-powered vehicles to the planned 52 m Spectre combat-oriented platform.

Saildrone vehicles use autonomous waypoint navigation and remote supervision to remain at sea for extended periods. Depending on the model, propulsion combines wind, solar-generated electrical power, electric motors, or diesel engines.

The operational family includes the Explorer, Voyager, and Surveyor. Spectre was announced in 2026 as a larger platform intended for anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, electronic warfare, and modular weapon payloads.

Early development

Engineer Richard Jenkins founded Saildrone in 2012. The vehicle concept evolved from his Greenbird wind-powered land vehicle. Early marine prototypes used a narrow hull with two outriggers, while later vessels adopted a single hull, a deep keel, and a rigid composite wing.

In 2014, Saildrone and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory began a partnership to refine the vehicles and their meteorological, oceanographic, and acoustic sensors. This is the earliest supported year in which the Saildrone vehicle family was under documented physical development. The design and its early scientific applications are described by NOAA Fisheries.

Two vehicles participated in the NASA-funded SPURS-2 ocean-observation campaign in 2017. In 2019, a fleet supported fisheries surveys off the western United States. During the same year, vehicle SD 1020 completed an autonomous circumnavigation of Antarctica, while SD 1021 crossed the Atlantic in both directions.

Expansion of the family

The Explorer established the small, wind-powered configuration. Saildrone subsequently developed the 10 m Voyager for maritime awareness, mapping, and patrol missions. The 19.8 m Surveyor was launched in January 2021 as a larger ocean-mapping platform. It completed a voyage from San Francisco to Honolulu in July 2021 while mapping approximately 22,000 square kilometres of seabed.

In 2021, an Explorer entered Hurricane Sam and collected observations in Category 4 conditions. The United States Navy also began operational testing of Saildrone vehicles with Task Force 59 in the Gulf of Aqaba. Saildrone and Thales Australia later tested a Surveyor with the BlueSentry thin-line towed sonar array. The vehicle operated continuously for 26 days during the trials. Its low acoustic output under wind propulsion was intended to support detection and classification of underwater and surface contacts.

Spectre program

Saildrone announced Spectre in April 2026. Long-lead materials for the first two vessels had been ordered in October 2025. The company presented two configurations: the wing-equipped Silent Endurance model and a wingless Stealth model. A 1:7 scale model underwent tow-tank testing in Denmark, including trials representing full speed in Sea State 5.

Fincantieri Marinette Marine is scheduled to build the aluminum hulls in Wisconsin, while American Magic Services is to manufacture the composite wings in Florida. The first full-size vessel is planned to begin sea trials in early 2027. The manufacturer announcement and an independent Naval News report describe the program and its planned payloads.

Design

Hull and wing

The Explorer uses a narrow hull, deep keel, rudder, and rigid wing. A trim tab controls the wing angle, while the rudder steers the hull and the keel provides stability. The larger Voyager and Surveyor retain the recognizable wing-assisted layout. The vessels can operate without an onboard crew.

Spectre represents a substantial change in scale. It has an aluminum hull and twin shaft lines. The Silent Endurance variant adds a 43 m composite wing, while the wingless Stealth configuration reduces the vessel's visual and radar profile.

Propulsion and electrical power

The Explorer relies on wind for propulsion and solar energy for its instruments. Voyager adds a 4 kW auxiliary electric motor. Surveyor also combines renewable power with systems suited to longer mapping and surveillance missions.

Spectre uses combined electric and diesel propulsion. Its electric mode is intended to provide low-noise operation at speeds up to 12 knots. More than 5,000 horsepower of diesel power is available for higher-speed movement. Controllable-pitch propellers are intended to improve efficiency and allow operators to manage the vessel's acoustic signature.

Navigation and sensors

The smaller Saildrone vehicles follow prescribed waypoints while compensating for wind and currents. Satellite communications allow operators at mission control to supervise each vessel and modify its route. Explorer safety equipment includes an Automatic Identification System transceiver, radar reflector, navigation light, and cameras covering the sky, sea, and horizon.

Scientific payloads can measure wind, atmospheric pressure, air and sea temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, waves, ocean currents, carbon dioxide, and acoustic targets. Mission-specific equipment can include echo sounders, acoustic Doppler current profilers, cameras, radar, and hydrographic mapping sensors.

Spectre is designed around a concealed modular payload deck. Proposed payloads include Mk 70 vertical-launch modules, JAGM launchers, TB-29 towed arrays, CAPTAS variable-depth sonar, electronic-warfare equipment, and mine-laying modules. These integrations remain planned or under development and should not be treated as operational armament.

Operational history

Saildrone vehicles have supported scientific work in the Arctic, Antarctic, Atlantic, North Sea, tropical Pacific, and Gulf of Mexico. Missions have included fisheries surveys, carbon-dioxide measurements, ecosystem monitoring, hurricane research, oil detection, ice-edge observation, bathymetric mapping, and maritime-domain awareness.

The United States Coast Guard tested Saildrone technology in Hawaii in 2020 for remote maritime awareness. From 2021, the United States Navy used Explorer vehicles in exercises associated with Task Force 59 and Fifth Fleet operations. Explorer vehicles participated in the Digital Horizon, Sentinel Shield, and United States-United Arab Emirates unmanned exercises between 2021 and 2023.

In 2023, the United States Fourth Fleet began employing Voyager vehicles in the Caribbean under Operation Windward Stack. The vehicles supported monitoring of maritime activity, including human-smuggling routes. Saildrone operations later expanded in support of Joint Interagency Task Force South and United States Naval Forces Southern Command.

A Voyager directly supported a Caribbean drug interdiction that resulted in the seizure of cocaine valued at more than $81 million. In 2026, the United States Navy awarded Saildrone a $16.3 million task order to continue Voyager operations in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. The vehicles provide persistent surface and subsurface surveillance for counternarcotics missions.
