History

USS Minnesota (SSN-783) is a Virginia-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine of the United States Navy. It is the tenth submarine of the class and the final boat built to the Block II configuration.

The submarine is designed for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence collection, precision land attack, and support of special operations. Its nuclear propulsion system provides long endurance, while its sensors and reduced acoustic signature support operations in contested maritime environments.

USS Minnesota became the first Virginia-class submarine permanently forward-deployed at Naval Base Guam. This assignment places the submarine closer to operational areas in the Western Pacific and reduces the transit time required for Indo-Pacific missions.

Construction and commissioning

The United States Navy awarded the contract for USS Minnesota on 14 August 2003. Newport News Shipbuilding laid the keel on 20 May 2011. The submarine was christened on 27 October 2012 and launched on 3 November 2012.

Huntington Ingalls Industries delivered USS Minnesota to the Navy on 6 June 2013, nearly eleven months ahead of schedule. The submarine was commissioned at Norfolk, Virginia, on 7 September 2013.

After commissioning, USS Minnesota remained at the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut, for more than two years. A defective pipe joint associated with the reactor's steam-producing system required corrective work. The submarine left the shipyard on 27 May 2016 and moved to Naval Submarine Base New London to prepare for fleet operations.

USS Minnesota arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on 17 March 2022. On 26 November 2024, it arrived at Naval Base Guam and became the first Virginia-class submarine assigned there for permanent forward deployment.

Design

USS Minnesota belongs to Block II of the Virginia class. Block II submarines were assembled from four large construction modules, compared with ten modules used for the first four boats of the class. This production method reduced construction time.

The submarine has a streamlined hull, a single shaft, and a pump-jet propulsor. A secondary propulsion motor is also fitted. The crew operates from an integrated command environment that combines navigation, sonar, tactical information, and weapons control.

Propulsion

An S9G pressurized-water nuclear reactor supplies steam to two turbines. The turbines drive the submarine's single pump-jet propulsor. Nuclear propulsion allows extended submerged operations, with endurance principally limited by provisions and crew requirements rather than propulsion fuel.

Sensors

USS Minnesota is equipped with AN/BVS-1 photonic masts instead of a traditional optical periscope. Its reported equipment also includes an AN/BPS-16(V)4 navigation radar, an AN/BQQ-10 sonar processing system, and a TB-16 towed sonar array.

Armament

The submarine has four 533 mm torpedo tubes for weapons including Mk 48 Advanced Capability heavyweight torpedoes. Twelve vertical-launch cells accommodate BGM-109 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles. These weapons support attacks against submarines, surface ships, and targets ashore.

Operational history

After moving to Guam in November 2024, USS Minnesota conducted operations with regional partners. It visited HMAS Stirling in Western Australia, supported the Royal Australian Navy's Submarine Command Course, and participated in Exercise Lungfish. It also visited Darwin for bilateral defense engagements.

USS Minnesota returned to Naval Base Guam on 29 July 2026 after completing its first deployment from the island. During the deployment, it participated in the multinational Exercise Valiant Shield 2026 and visited Okinawa and Sasebo in Japan. The Okinawa visit demonstrated that the Navy could support forward undersea operations away from its traditional submarine bases.

Two officers and 20 enlisted sailors earned their Submarine Warfare Insignia during the deployment. The qualification confirms their knowledge of submarine systems, watch stations, and mission procedures. The U.S. Pacific Fleet described the deployment as the first completed by a permanently forward-deployed Virginia-class submarine.

USS Minnesota is assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 15 at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam. It is one of four forward-deployed fast-attack submarines based on the island.
