Breda Grenade Model 1935 History

In 1935, just before World War II, the Italian Army launched three infantry grenades under the designation Modello 35 ("Model 35"), which were then supplied by three Italian companies - SRCM, OTO and Breda. The most successful - albeit tactically limited - became the SRCM Modello 35, with OTO and Breda each bringing their own designs. All TNT fillers used have chip fragments and are produced in full-charge high explosive (HE), low-charge HE, practice and smoke variants. The fully-charged version is painted in full red, while the low-charge version has red stripes.

The practice editions are all black.

Breda designs have more in common with OTO products than with SRCM. Total weight is 200 grams, filled with 60 grams of TNT. Each unit measures 97mm in length and 53mm in diameter. The action is traditional, with a primary safety pin removed before the throw. After the throw, the hard hat fell off the grenade and pulled onto the safety bar, causing the grenade to activate.

The grenade then relied on impact-based detonation, which proved unreliable. The fragments came from lead bullets attached to small lead balls inside the grenade body.
