History of the Bushmaster M4

Despite early problems, AR-15/M-16-style assault weapons have spread globally. This eventually led to the style being licensed and produced by other firearm manufacturers around the world, including Bushmaster Firearms International. The Bushmaster M4 carbine is based on the AR-15, which is also the basis for the US military's Colt M16 assault rifle.

The M16's carbine shape is the M4, and the Bushmaster model mimics it in both form and function.

The Bushmaster M4 weighs 6.22 pounds and has an overall length of 34.75 inches. The shaft can be folded for a shorter profile. The barrel assembly is 16 inches long.

Cartridges supported in this series include . 223 Remington, 5. 56x45mm NATO, 6. 8mm Remington SPC and 7. 62x39mm Soviet, depending on rifling. The action is based on the same pneumatic rotating bolt system as other AR-15 clones. Most versions are limited to semi-automatic fire, one per trigger pull. Depending on the ammo, the weapon requires 26- and 30-round STANAG (AR-15/M16) magazines.

They are inserted into the magazine well in front of the trigger unit. Iron Sights are standard and adjustable to suit aiming requirements. Bushmaster models also have a 6-way adjustable shoulder rest. A slotted flash suppressor is mounted on the muzzle.

Optics are optional and supported through the receiver.

Other tactical accessories that can be attached to the weapon include laser sights, foregrips and flashlights.

Variants of the Bushmaster M4 include the M4A2 and M4A3, which largely mimic the shape of the respective Colt M4 carbine in the military. A "Patrol's Carbine" variant also went on sale.

The "M4 Type Post-Ban" model was developed in the mid-1990s to comply with the (now expired) federal assault weapons ban.

The Bushmaster M4 is widely accepted as a military firearm with claimed users ranging from Australia and Bahrain to Uruguay and Zimbabwe. Members of the Czech Special Forces actively use the Bushmaster M4 (M4A3) modified to accommodate military accessories and weapons, the M203 40mm single-shot grenade launcher being an example of the latter.

By default, both the Georgian army and police elements depend on this type.

Bushmaster Firearms International (North Carolina) was established in 1973 and remains an active global supplier of firearms.
