History

The French military had been dodging reliable class light machine guns for years before World War II. The machine gun proved to be an extremely destructive weapon of war during World War I, and the French army's priority was to have an efficient burst firing system that provided the rifle squad with the necessary suppressive quality.

To date, the French army has relied on the completely unreliable 8mm Model 1915 "Chauchat" light machine gun, which was also passed on to incoming American soldiers. During World War I, the Americans introduced their famous Model 1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), which worked well with its powerful caliber.

The weapon will perform the same role as the BAR - Long Range Portable Rifle Caliber Fire - to support French rifle swarms by providing high-capacity suppressive firepower. The new light machine gun (LMG) will be complemented by a new French 7.5x54 cartridge based on the 7.5mm cartridge developed for the Swiss Army (usually based on the successful German 7.92mm cartridge).

The BAR-based design was created by Lieutenant Colonel Reibel under the banner of the Manufacture d'Armes de Chatellerault company and designated as 1924 "Model 1924" (officially "Fusil mitrailleur modele 1924"). However, the design of the Model 1924 soon developed several design flaws, mostly related to the action, barrel and cartridge used. The downsides required major improvements to the weapon, which included strengthening the internals, using a heavier barrel assembly and a shorter, less powerful cartridge.

The resulting design became the "Model 1924/29" (officially the "Fusil Mitraluer modele 1924 modifie 1929"), or casually the "Chatellerault Model 1929".

Externally, the Model 1929 resembles the British BREN and American BAR artillery types. The receiver is rectangular overall with clean lines, covered by a solid wood stock on one end (with an integrated shock absorber to delay recoil) and a long-barreled barrel assembly on the other.

Like the BREN, the Model 1929 uses a top-mounted, straight, detachable magazine that holds 25 rounds of 7.5x54mm French cartridges. Using the top mounted magazine forces the iron sights to be slightly offset to the left side of the body, which can be seen when viewing the weapon from above.

The ejection port is a large rectangular opening along the right side. The charging handle is also mounted on the right side of the body and locked with a cylindrical wooden button for easy grip. One of the more unique aspects of the M1929 was its use of a dual trigger mechanism, both mounted in an elongated trigger ring in front of the straight pistol grip.

Single-shot firing is achieved by using the frontmost trigger, while fully automatic fire is controlled by the rear trigger assembly. Like the BREN and BAR, the Model 1929 is a pneumatic weapon that requires the use of a gas cylinder mounted under the barrel.

The propellant gas is directed towards the muzzle end of the barrel and is used to repeat the firing action on subsequent shots. The muzzle itself was sealed with a conical flash suppressor, which proved to be common practice at the time. A folding bipod supported the gun forward, mounted behind the muzzle and in front of the cylinder.

The standard firing position is for the operator to lie behind his gun or to support the gun on a hillock or windowsill, then the operator kneels in the normal way.

As the war spread, the French had to take notice. On May 10, 1940, when the Germans officially invaded France, it was finally their turn to take the big stage. The French army, with its powerful weaponry, was defeated by the better leadership and tactical decisions of the Germans compared to the attackers. So, despite the presence of weapons like the Model 1929 in the stables, the French government had to surrender after 1 month and 15 days of bloody fighting.

Rather than risk destroying its historic capital, the French authorities ceded ownership of Paris to the invading German armyParis did not end its occupation until 1944. After the fall of France and placing the northern and western coasts under German control, the German Army obtained a usable stockpile of the Type 1929 and put it into service as the Kpfw MG 331(f).

The 1924 model was identified in German stock as Light MG 116(f). They were assigned to garrisons along the Atlantic Wall and also helped to strengthen the German presence in the Channel Islands - the only British territory the Germans held during the war.

The Channel Islands of the British Empire were under German control until May 9, 1945.

During the war, the Model 1929 proved to be a reliable and robust weapon. This is a well designed and built firearm with battlefield durability comparable to the American BAR. In fact, French soldiers preferred their homegrown development to American soldiers.

The weapon's systems and mechanics are well-protected against all forms of battlefield abuse and foreign artifacts, and as long as the weapon is properly maintained and handled, it can and will continue to provide decades of quality service. One of the tactical flaws that soon became apparent was the lack of a "quick change" barrel feature to prevent components from overheating and thus creating cracks in their surfaces (quick change barrels are now standard on most machine guns).

The Free French Forces managed to keep their stockpile of Model 1929 LMGs and use them alongside those now supplied by the Allies (mainly the US and the UK).

The Model 1929 had a lifespan well beyond its expected service life. After World War II, the type remained the standard light machine gun of the French Army.

Immediately after the war, French troops were involved in the Indochina conflict, which lasted from 1946 to 1954 and led to the Viet Minh victory. The Model 1929 is still widely used in the French Armed Forces, forming a squad support light machine gun role for its rifle squad.

In fact, this weapon was still found during the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (1955-1975), presumably from ex-French army stockpiles.

Other notable operations involving Type 1929 and its derivatives are the Algerian War (1954-1962), the Suez Crisis (1956) and the Cambodian Civil War (1970-1975). For the French Army, however, the Model 1929 was gradually replaced in military service with the introduction of the "AA-52 General Purpose Machine Gun" (GPMG) in 1952. However, the weapon is also loaded with French 7.5x54mm cartridges and is operated by a lever-delayed recoil system.

The AA-52 was eventually equipped with a 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge to meet NATO standards and was exported to over a dozen countries as a general purpose machine gun, airborne machine gun and vehicle mounted machine gun.

In addition to the French Army, the Polish Army also used the Type 1929, a derivative of the Type 1931. This type was used as a vehicle-mounted weapon on the French Hotchkiss and Renault light tanks before World War II.
