History of Colt Browning M1895 (Potato Harvester)

The U.S. government was convinced of the intrinsic value of machine guns based on the experience of the Spanish-American War of 1898 (and was not fully sold on the bulky Gatlings), so the U.S. government began adding more guns to its existing inventory. After trials, the choice fell on the Maxim water-cooled machine gun.

30 movements, the first 282 are purchased directly from the UK, the rest are backed by local production. Despite the selection, the United States also adopted a rather informal design of the John Browning machine gun, manufactured and sold under the Colt banner, known as the Model 1895 (or "M1895").

This weapon is also present in the Calibre Form 30, however, in an aerodynamic, air-cooled design.

The lever was ingenious for its time, requiring the user to manually rotate the lever handle to remove the spent cartridge and then insert a new, ready-to-fire cartridge into the chamber. Combined with a tubular magazine that fits under the barrel or in the stock, users benefit from a repetitive firing action unmatched by any other gun of the era.

These actions were at the heart of the successful line of Winchester rifles in the mid to late 19th century.

Browning considered this action in conjunction with a gas powertrain. The gas pressure created by the ignited cartridge can be drawn out of the barrel (behind the fired bullet) through a small opening into the cylinder. This force may provide an "automatic" mechanical action that drives the lever action arm.

The arm sits under the barrel and is fed back into the receiver by the collected air pressure - the resulting action is used to open the weapon's breech, remove the spent case, and put a new cartridge into the chamber in one fell swoop. The speed of action is so fast that a useful, sustained rate of fire can be achieved.

However, the movement of the arm requires about 20cm of clearance at the bottom of the gun to prevent the gun from digging into the dirt. It was this action that earned the gun the popular nickname "Potato Digger."

Overall, the M1895 was a fairly conventional looking weapon for its time, with a seemingly unremarkable receiver on the plate side holding the necessary internal workings, a gas cylinder and most of the barrel. The operator controls the weapon via an ergonomically designed fixed pistol grip located on the rear of the receiver, which is relatively easy to reach from the trigger assembly.

Aiming is precise long-range fire through an integrated iron assembly. Due to its operating weight, the weapon is mounted on an adjustable heavy duty tripod.

In practice, the M1895 is known for its well-controlled recoil and practical rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. The muzzle velocity is 2,800 feet per second and is fed through a 240-round cloth belt. The unique action of this weapon increases the reliability of the design, as each round is drawn and the next one starts to activate. The weapon was originally procured by the US Navy in over 200 examples (called "Mark 1"), albeit in 6mm caliber, and then procured to interested global parties such as Spain (7x57mm caliber) and Italy ( 6.5 x caliber) 52 mm) outlet caliber). The weapon was also adopted by the U.S.

Marine Corps, forcing it to serve during the 1898 invasion of Guantanamo Bay. The U.S. Army followed suit, using their M1895 machine guns in both. 30-40 Collars and .30-06 Springfield Chambers, although these examples are mostly used for training work. After standardization in 1906.

The M1895 quickly became obsolete before the First World War (1914-1918) and was generally considered obsolete when the war hit Europe in the summer of 1914. In 1915, the Canadians modernized the gun, producing the M1915 variant. This model has added cooling fins to keep the barrel from overheating, and a new lighter tripod has been designed to improve portability. Engineers also devised a new cable-based cocking system that allows for rear-loading of the weapon. The M1915 was used by the Canadian and Imperial Russian armies in World War I and adopted by the US Army (as the M1917).

The United States entered the war in 1917 and purchased about 4,800 M1915 guns, of which about 1,500 were supplied to the Navy. The Marlin Ordnance Company received production fees for the M1915 (renamed "Marlin-Rockwell" in 1916).

At the end of the war, Canada eventually abandoned the M1915 in favor of the more popular water-cooled Vickers machine gun, although front-line reports on the Browning design generally agreed that it was a good and reliable platform.

In 1916, the US Navy carried an improved variant of the M1895 through the Model 1916, intended for use as an aircraft machine gun, manufactured by Marin. This variant uses an all-new linear piston arrangement instead of the original complex lever arm movement.

The interior had to be modified accordingly to accommodate the new action, although the gun remained largely true to the original - some of its components were compatible with earlier brands. It also proved to be a much lighter weapon than Colt Browning's original offering, and excelled in the aircraft machine gun role, where it could be successfully synchronized to fire through the spinning propeller blades.

The 1916 model was followed by the 1917 model (also Marlin), another airborne variant designed to be coupled with a synchronizer. This version introduced a new hydropneumatic action with an in-line piston arrangement, and production peaked at around 13,230 units.

The first gun was discovered in July 1917.

In June 1918, the M1917 was further modified, but is now intended to be used as a vehicle/tank machine gun. An aluminum radiator was added for maximum cooling (weight wasn't that important for vehicle-mounted weapons), and a pistol grip was incorporated into the design. This variant came very late in the war, as the armistice was officially signed in November to end the conflict. Only 428 examples of the M1918 were completed at this time, although the brand's manufacture continued until 1919, when another 2,580 entered circulation.

A form of light machine gun for platoons was retained as a support firearm, but not used.

For all models, the production of aircraft machine guns totaled 38,000, of which 1,470 were from the vehicle/tank machine gun family. While the United States officially abandoned the use of Colt-Browning/Marlin machine guns during the interwar period, the United Kingdom received an outdated supply of Marlins from the United States in 1941, as the country experienced a severe shortage of small arms early in World War I. As secondary weapons, these machine guns were often installed on British merchant ships for self-defense purposes, and their repeat-firing capabilities and reliable action were better than nothing.

The M1895 was used by the Poles in the last defense of Warsaw during the German-Soviet invasion in 1939.
