Defcom XL79 Composite

History

The XL79 Composite is a modernized version of the Vietnam War-era M79 single-shot grenade launcher. The M79 performed well at the time, replacing the rifle grenades commonly found in American WWII infantry. The system was designed as a rifle-like component with a breaking-action breech that could accept a 40x46mm grenade projectile, providing the operator with direct and indirect fire in support of Allied operations. Such systems, however, preclude the use of viable secondary weapons, so operators are often forced to carry simple sidearms or combat knives. Continuing this trend, the XL79 introduces the M79 concept in an advanced lightweight polymer body for ease of handling and portability.

Compared to the original M79, the XL79 is about 50% lighter while firing the same low-velocity 40mm shells used by the U.S. Army and armed forces around the world. The XL79 is a product of Defcom LLC, a Commerce, Michigan-based company.

The Xl79 was in traditional form with a round barrel assembly that hinged forward to reveal the breech. Loading and reloading is done in the traditional way by inserting a 40mm grenade into the open breech.

The system then shuts down and starts up as usual using a double-action trigger with a safety mechanism. The barrel is connected to a small area receiver that manages the most compact form. The receiver has an integral pistol grip with a trigger assembly, and the loop is large enough to be used with gloves. A detachable flip-up front sight (up to 425 yards) is mounted near the muzzle and folds down when not in use. This is also combined with the front sight for precise shooting at range.

The weapon also includes a cutout shoulder rest that folds over the right side of the body. When folded, the XL79 becomes an extremely compact weapon - a feature that the original M79 series lacked. Accessory rails are located on the top and front underside of the barrel to increase the weapon's tactical utility on the battlefield.

Two sling swivels allow attachment of the shoulder straps.

Compared to the original M79, the overall design of the XL79 is lighter, reducing fatigue and improving transport efficiency. Total weight is 3.1 pounds (compared to the M79's 6.45 pounds). With stock open, the weapon measures 24.75 inches long, compared to the M79's 28.75 inches barrel length. However, the foldable nature of the XL79 increases portability to 16" while managing an 8" barrel (the M79 uses a 14" barrel length).

The XL79 also has far fewer moving parts and is designed to meet specific US military and NATO standards for barrel rifles, accessory support (via the rail section provided) and use of low velocity 40mm grenades.

Defcom LLC sells the XL79 in three tactical finishes: Matte Black, Matte Desert Sand, and Matte Forest Green.
