History of FEG KGP-9

The FEG KGP-9 submachine gun (SMG) originated in the late 1980s in the late Cold War (1947-1991), from the Eastern European country of Hungary. The weapon became a no-frills design, not envisaged for military export or service abroad, primarily issued to the Hungarian army and security forces for close combat/defense.

Fegyver-es Gepgyar (FEG) (founded in 1891) is manufactured on site, including cast and pressed steel structures.

At its heart, the KGP-9 is a downright highly traditional submachine gun, firing off-the-shelf German 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridges (rather than Soviet-style cartridges) favored by the West. The internal action is based on the proven recoil principle, with an open bolt design where the striker interacts with the hammer. The exterior design is relatively clean and unobstructed, with a rectangular receiver and a sleek front end. Most of the barrel length is shrouded, but interestingly, this component can be replaced with a longer barrel to increase attack range and turn the base SMG into a de facto carbine attack weapon.

The cord shoulder rest has been placed on the hinge so it can be folded up (above the receiver) for a more compact footprint. For ease of carrying the weapon, shoulder straps can be attached.

The feeding system relies on a straight, spring-loaded, detachable magazine that is deployed in front of the trigger unit - the magazine can hold up to 25 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The rate of fire reached 900 rounds per minute and the muzzle velocity was 1,280 feet per second.

Aiming is via standard front and rear iron assemblies. The ejection port is on the right side of the fuselage, and the charging handle is on the left side.

In addition to the standard KGP-9 assault weapon, there is the KGPF-9, which is limited to semi-automatic fire (SAO) sold on the civilian market.
