FERFRANS SOAR (Special Operations Assault Rifle)

History

FERFRANS of California produces what it describes as an improved version of the classic M4/M16 Selective Fire Assault Rifle/Carbine, the SOAR - "Special Operations Assault Rifle". While retaining many of the proven features of the M16/M4 series, it brings several design changes to improve inherent long-term reliability and overall accuracy.

SOAR has been in production since its launch in 2004.

The key feature of SOAR is its "Delayed Searing Activation System" (DSAS), a patented system used to reduce the M16/M4's fully automatic cyclic rate of fire, thereby increasing the system's accuracy and overall durability. This reduces the M16/M4's original 850-900 rounds per minute to a manageable speed of 550-680 rounds per minute. The result is a long gun that provides better automatic fire control and less wear on the bolt system.

The rifle is loaded with the ubiquitous 5.56mm Medium Rifle Cartridge (.223 Remington), fed from a 20-round, 30-round or 90-round detachable magazine (STANAG style). The internal action of the base weapon is a gas operation with a rotating bolt and a direct impact system.

Near the pistol grip is the fire selector, which offers three modes: safe, semi (burst) and full auto. The shoulder rest is M4 foldable (six positions possible) and M16 style handles (removable) are marked above the receiver. The barrel is chrome plated and is solidly constructed for sustained fire, with lengths ranging from 10.5" to 20".

The muzzle brake has multiple slots to reduce recoil. The Picatinny rail section for mounting various tactical accessories is located around the handguard assembly. All other physical characteristics of this weapon correspond to the original M16/M4 series.

SOAR-P ("P" = "piston") is a branch of the SOAR product with improved "off-water" amphibious capabilities. It takes its name from its short stroke, piston actuated (rotating bolt) system and self-contained Sear disconnect switch.

Currently (2017) SOAR provides limited services to a few global parties. Malaysian SWAT relies on this type, as do US SWAT and Philippine SWAT. Peru is another named operator.
