History of the Heckler & Koch USP (Universal Automatic Pistol)
Heckler & Koch USP (Universal Self-Loading Pistol) is an amalgam design by the German company that wanted to combine the best qualities of a safety firearm with the ruggedness and reliability of a military pistol to support the lucrative US market The result was a well-made, highly reliable semi-automatic pistol that has since found wide use at all levels, including special forces and law enforcement (USP formed the Mk 23 Mod 0 "SOCOM" pistol for the U.S. Navy SEALs).
USP was developed between 1989 and 1992 and launched in 1993. The modified USP used in SOCOM trials became one of the most tested pistols in history, ensuring the weapon was the perfect design for advanced agents.
Using feedback from law enforcement and military personnel during development, HK took the Browning-designed cam lock bolt mechanism and mated it with its own patented recoil reduction system, while encasing key internal components in corrosion-resistant metal, and Lightweight polymer construction may be used. The recoil reduction system helps improve overall accuracy and reduces structural fatigue of the part, while the use of plastic reduces wearer fatigue and handling weight. The pistol has an easy-to-use combination safety/unlock lever on the left side of the frame, but this mount can be easily rotated to the right if desired.
Trigger actions can also be customized to suit the shooter's taste using the available dual action only or combined dual/single action features. The overall design is broadly consistent with other semi-automatic pistol offerings, many of which date back to the original excellent Browning M1911 series, including the widely accepted ribbed rear frame side for slide gripping. The hammer is partially exposed at the rear of the frame, and the magazine is loaded into the pistol grip as usual. The magazine release lever is ambidextrous, and a Laser Aiming Module (LAM) or tactical flashlight can be attached to the lower front of the frame as an optional accessory. For tactical models, Picatinny rails can be used to mount optics above, beside and below the frame.
The original USP series was sold in three different popular chambers - . 40 S&W, 9 x 19mm Parabellum and .45 ACP. That . The 40 S&W design was the original USP chamber (as USP40), followed by the USP9 with a 9mm chamber, and then the . 45 ACP cartridge support was introduced.
Special version uses . 357 SIG cartridge (USP compact).
The USP has since evolved into several major production forms - Base USP Pistol, USP Compact (small frame model), USP Tactical, USP Compact Tactical, USP Expert, USP Match, USP Elite, USP Combat Competition and P8 (the name of the Bundeswehr). One government agency model includes a double-acting system without a manual safety/unlock lever. The USP Tactical is a compact version of the basic USP design with specific features of the SOCOM Mark 23 line of pistols focused on Special Forces. They differ visually in that the barrel section extends out of the front end of the frame, where it is used to mount the silencer.
USP Compact Tactical Intended for use by US Special Forces, has a threaded barrel end for a compact silencer. 45 ACP frames.
