History

While the 1987 VSS "Vintorez" Suppression Sniper Rifle proved excellent for its given role, it was an expensive end product for Russian special forces and internal security. In the 1990s, the KBP Instrument Design Bureau led a program to produce a budget-friendly replacement, resulting in the VSK-94 suppressor sniper rifle.

The VSK-94 was a further development of the 9A-91 carbine automatic weapon introduced in 1993 (also introduced by KBP) and added its proven elements to the VSK-94 development in 1994. Like the VSS, the VSK-94 uses the same Soviet-Russian 9 x 39mm subsonic cartridge (basically a full-size 7.62 x 39mm rifle case with a modified neck to accommodate 9mm bullets) plus a mount The silencer assembly on the muzzle.

This combination reduces the sound of firing bullets while maintaining the useful attack range and repeat-fire characteristics of an automatic weapon.

The original 9A-91 carbine assault weapon is still recognizable in the VSK-94 design. Key physical changes include an integrated dual support, lightweight polymer stock and cylindrical muffler assembly.

The VSK-94 shares the same receiver line as the 9A-91 series, as well as a direct detachable magazine. The pistol grip provides ergonomic comfort, and the extended trigger ring allows use with gloved hands. As usual, the magazine is inserted in front of the trigger group. The charging handle is located on the right side of the fuselage, and the ejection port is also located on the right side.

Therefore, the optics are mounted on the left side of the receiver - standard equipment is 4x PSO-1 series telescopic sights (supported by the iron sights of the 9A-91). The PSO-1 series is a common sight for the well-known Dragunov SVD series of sniper rifles. The receiver structure is all-steel structure and can be used in the field.

Like the 9A-91, the VSK-94 is fed from a detachable, spring-loaded 20-round straight-box magazine attached to a pneumatic rotating bolt breech. This gives a rate of fire of about 700 rounds per minute, a muzzle velocity of 270 meters per second, and an effective range of 400 meters.

The VSK-94 suppressor sniper rifle is still restricted to Russian special forces and internal security forces and used in covert operations. With this in mind, the VSK-94 certainly did its due combat duty in the Russian special forces SPETSNAZ.
