History
The NSG-85 is a new type of Chinese military sniper rifle developed from the Type 85 series rifle. The Type 85 series rifle itself evolved from the old Soviet 7.62mm caliber SVD sniper rifle line. The NSG-85 is state-of-the-art, fully supporting all types of tactical accessories, using lightweight composite materials where appropriate.
It holds a 7.62x54mmR cartridge with a short-count SVD-style curved magazine case. The weapon lacks the traditional sights of its ancestors and is intended as a true precision weapon - a telescopic sight above the receiver.
The weapon largely adopts the same shape as the original SVD and later Type 85 rifle designs, especially at the receiver. There are noticeable changes to the shoulder rests and handguards - the former is adjustable and comes with a cheek rest and monopod, while the latter offers four-section Picatinny rails for running along the top, sides of the handguards and below to provide auxiliary support. This allows the gun to easily use any off-the-shelf optics above the gun, a tactical flashlight and laser sight on the side, and a foldable, adjustable bipod under the gun's front weight. The barrel is a bit protruding in design and doesn't seem to use a flash suppressor or any kind of muzzle mount. The pistol grip is ergonomically designed with a slight rearward angle and a slightly forward trigger group.
The trigger ring is intentionally large to encourage use with gloved hands. The magazine release/catcher is located in a prominent position behind the magazine well - a tradition in Soviet rifles.
The NSG-85 was introduced in June 2014.
