History of the Ontario Mark 3 Navy (MKIII)
While the dagger proved vital in assassination and hand-to-hand combat in ancient history, it is a "battle knife" in today's high-tech battlefield. The Combat Knife is a warrior's last line of defense, and it can also serve as a kind of personal ally when trying to survive outside their squad or frontline operating base (FOB). For the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy SEALs, the Ontario Mark 3 Navy (MKIII) Combat Knife (also known as "Ka-Bar") is used for this purpose.
The Mark III - in its current form - has been in service in the United States for over 50 years, manufactured by the Ontario Knife Company in New York, USA - and has been in business since 1889.
The heart and soul of the
Mark 3 is its 6.5" fixed blade, designed to stab, chop and slash. The main and clamping edges are smooth, and the spine has a row of serrations. The two edges meet at a defined point at the tip of the blade, making it easy to handle canvas and even leather. The blade is made of 440A stainless steel with a black oxide finish to keep it shiny. The handle is well designed for a firm grip and, like the included scabbard, is made of molded high-strength plastic.
The handle also has a flat striking surface for crushing. A short strap can be attached to the bottom of the handle with the included loop.
This construction makes the knife likely to have a long life if it does not outlive its owner, and due to its intended use at sea and underwater, it is made of materials that will not be affected by corrosion of. ocean. Overall length is 10.75 inches, blade. 165 inches thick.
In addition to its intended use, when used as a makeshift hammer, anchor or prying tool, the Mark III can prove to be a soldier's best friend. . basically limited to imagination and the situation at hand - albeit within reason, of course.
