PGW C14 Timberwolf MRSWS Story
The C14 "Timberwolf" sniper rifle was introduced by the Canadian Army in 2005 and has been actively used as part of coalition operations in Afghanistan. Essentially, the rifle is a standard bolt-action rifle designed for the powerful .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge and fired from a five-round detachable magazine.
Manufactured by Canada's PGW Defense Technologies, Incorporated (formerly Prairie Gun Works), this weapon has replaced the obsolete C3A1 rifle as the Canadian sniper (C3A1 is the Canadian codename for the British Parker Hale M82, described elsewhere on this page).
The C14 is based on a civilian hunting/sporting rifle originally developed by Prairie Gun Works. Entered a competition to find the next Canadian Army standardized sniper rifle that would meet the requirements of the Army born in the 1990s.
Trials were conducted in 2001 and the C14 was declared the winner.
The C14 weighs 15.6 lbs (unladen) and has an overall length of 1,245 mm. The barrel is 660mm long. The muzzle velocity is 2,700 feet per second and the effective range is 1,500 meters. The receiver supports day and night vision devices.
The C14 features a free-floating barrel, which means that no part of the barrel's length touches the stock - instead, it is bonded directly to the receiver for maximum accuracy. It's built to be durable enough to handle the rigors of war. The shaft is made of fiberglass to keep the design as light as possible, yet strong enough for battlefield use. The cheek part is adjustable. The safety mechanism has three positions, one of which is a broken gun for cleaning and repairs.
Like other military bolt-action rifles, the C14 lacks the traditional iron sights in favor of specialized scopes. Sling loops allow slings to be attached.
Sections of the Picatinny rail allow the attachment of various tactical accessories, including various types of scopes and foldable bipods. The muzzle brake of the barrel can also be replaced with a silencer.
PGW Defense also produces the effective "Coyote" (7.62mm) and LRT-3 (.50 BMG) series of rifles.
