History
The culmination of missile design work by Soviet engineers in the 1950s and 1960s became the 9K338 "Igla-S" (NATO: SA-24 "Grinch"), a man-portable shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missile in 2004. Cold War Decades The first few 9K32, 9K32M, 9K34, 9K310, 9K38 and 9K310 that developed into the new millennium followed this path.
Like its predecessors, the 9K338 series is based on a new system designed to withstand modern confrontations. The 9K338 uses an upgraded "Igla-S" missile.
Like the previous line of Soviet shoulder-fired missile systems, the 9K338 features an elongated launch tube that accommodates the missile, integrated optics and guidance systems, and a trigger with a grip assembly. Night vision is standard on every 9K338 device. The new missile has a heavier, more powerful warhead to maximize damage capabilities, as well as contact and timed fuzes for increased attack range. The warhead is a high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG) and weighs 2.5 kg.
Guidance is homing via infrared and the intervention range is between 500m and 6,000m. The 9K338 is a line-of-sight weapon that requires a clear line of sight between the target and the operator. It is suitable for low-flying aircraft such as helicopters, combat platforms and transport aircraft.
To date (2013), the operators of the 9K338 series are the Russian Army, Brazil, Iran, Libya, Slovenia, Syria, Venezuela and Vietnam. Iraq received a batch of Igla-S MANPADS in late 2014 as part of an agreement the government signed with Russia back in October 2012.
