History of the SIG MG 50

The Swiss SIG developed the MG 50 along the lines of the General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), which can be sold locally to the Swiss Army and as an export product to allies worldwide. This no-frills machine gun evolved into an air-cooled, pneumatic system that offered variable chambers according to customer needs. Supply is via the belt, and the design can be used in a variety of applications - squad support, base defense, on-board, etc.

In the end, the weapon tested with the MG 51 was selected only by the Danish army. Room 30-06. The Swedish army also tested the design, but ultimately decided to abandon it. In this form it was designated MG 53.

The MG 50 is designed in a very traditional form - a wooden stock is attached to the rear of the metal body, and the lower grip is covered with a wooden grip. Feed from the recipient's right side. The quick swap feature enables the field operations team to take some cooling measures.

For this, the barrel was also grooved and closed at the muzzle with a conical compensator. A spiked bipod can be mounted under the front of the weapon for more mobile fire support, or a light tripod can provide greater stability for defensive aiming fire from a fixed position.

Optics can also be mounted on the rear of the receiver for more accurate long-range shots.

The MG 50 is designed to replace the Furrer 25 Light Machine Gun (LMG) and Maxim machine guns (both described elsewhere on this page) that were in service with the Swiss Army prior to World War II. In this regard, the gun failed.
