History of the Winchester Model 1200
The
Model 1200 is a powerful full size pump action shotgun designed for a variety of markets including civilian, sports and military. The gun was developed in 1964 by engineer T.C. Johnson through the legendary Winchester Group. Production began in 1965, and from 1968 to 1969, the U.S. military became the famous operator of the shotgun - just in time for the weapon to be useful in the Vietnam War. At close range, a shotgun such as the Winchester Model 1200 can be used to unleash a devastating salvo of fire, ideal for dispatch games, opening doors or - in the case of military use - destroying enemies (bayonet lugs are optional). ). Furthermore, such a system may prove useful in crowd control when combined with "non-lethal" rounds.
Regardless, the Model 1200 (and the related Model 1300) proved to be an effective and robust shotgun design that found a home in a variety of applications.
Visually, the Winchester Model 1200 is a traditional shotgun design with a wooden fixed shoulder rest, under-barrel pump slide, multi-shot tubular magazine and full-length barrel. Shotguns are listed at 6.5 lbs and are available in 12, 16 and 20 calibers. The standard barrel is 20 inches long. The system is fed via a spring-loaded tubular magazine that can hold multiple rounds (between four and seven depending on the model) and is powered by a hand pumped "slide system" that runs under the barrel Drive - from front to back in a sporty manner. The shells are loaded into the tubular magazine through the opening along the front and bottom of the receiver, and are ejected from the right side of the gun body after firing.
The trigger is placed on the back of the receiver and is protected in an elongated ring. The contour of the shoulder rest forms the main grip and shoulder rest. The operator's second hand is used to support the front of the weapon, using a ribbed pump slider as a fore grip.
Aiming is carried out through the front sight located at the end of the muzzle. The militarized version of the Model 1200 is - in every respect - a direct replica of the civilian form, notably including perforated handguards, bayonet lugs and a swivel sling to use the optional shoulder straps.
The Model 1200 is also equipped with the patented "Winchoke" quick change system - the first shotgun produced in Winchester.
The Model 1200 was produced in several variants based on the base Model 1200 (with a four-cup tubular magazine). The successor model, the 1200 Defender, increased the inner shell capacity to six, and the "Ted Williams Model 1200" was nothing more than a 1200 model brought to the civilian market by the famous department store Sears, Roebuck and Company.
The '1200 Hunt' has a 28" barrel with an integrated choke function and a five-round magazine.
The
Model 1200 was updated in 1983 to be the "Model 1300", which itself was manufactured in several different forms under the American Repeat Arms brand name, a company founded by former Winchester employees. At the top is the base five-door 1300 model, followed by the seven-door 1300 Defender. The Model 1300 Marine features an electroless nickel plated barrel and magazine tube assembly.
Production of all Model 1300s ended in 2006, and the U.S. Repeat Arms Corporation filed for bankruptcy.
The Model 2200 exists as a complete stock of the Model 1200 and is sold in Canada. The Model 120 "Plain Jane" came with a birch stock and a fixed choke system and was eventually sold in major department stores.
