History of the Z-M weapon LR-300

In 2000, Z-M Arms of Burnaston, Massachusetts, USA developed an AR-15 based weapon conversion kit to produce the "LR-300" tactical automatic weapon. This kit overhauls the original AR-15-style assault weapon by redesigning the direct gas shock system to allow the use of a new, side-folding, adjustable skeletal stock (replacing the M16-style cylindrical recoil buffer used). These changes allow for increased compactness of the weapon, which is always a valuable feature in some long guns.

Optional Picatinny rails can also be mounted above the upper receiver to support tactical accessories such as optics and sights. Broadly speaking, the form and function of the AR-15 weapon remain largely unchanged, although results from receiving the kit have been mixed.

Four main versions of the kit are available - two for the military/law enforcement market and two for the civilian/sports market - the LR-300 ML-A is designed for the military/law enforcement community and includes an 11.5 inch barrel assembly and selective fire mode. Likewise, the LR-300 ML-N features an 11.5-inch barrel with selective fire, an optional Picatinny rail, and a Nylatron front (the latter replaces the aluminum front). The LR-300 SR-A for the civilian market is a semi-automatic only model with a barrel length of 16.5 inches.

The LR-300 SR-N is only available in semi-automatic firing mode and is equipped with a Nylatron front baffle and optional Picatinny rail.

The rights to the product were sold to Para Ordnance in 2009.
