History

Since the First World War (1914-1918), with the increase in armor protection, the field of anti-tank weapons has correspondingly expanded . Early counters included general-purpose artillery, mines, and large-caliber rifle systems. With the advancement of missile technology, the concept of anti-tank missile launchers emerged and proved to be the most effective means of intercepting tanks at long distances.

During the Cold War, Japan followed other global military powers in adopting missile-launching systems designed to destroy enemy tanks. In 1952, the U.S. occupation of Japan ended and Japan established a new local military force, including its ground, air, and maritime components, through the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF).

In 1957, the Defense Agency's Institute of Technical Research and Development began work on a wire-guided anti-tank missile system with armor-piercing missiles and reusable launchers for use by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). In 1964, after necessary testing, further development and trials, the gun was officially adopted by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force as "Type 64 MAT", although officially marked as "Type 64 ATM", production was taken over by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), KHI Subsequent anti-tank weapons would eventually be offered over the next few decades, culminating in the most advanced 01 series in use today.
