History of the ZH-29
Emmanuel Holek designed the ZH-29 as a military automatic rifle. The rifle was born in the famous Czech Brno factory in the second half of the 1920s and gradually evolved into a very powerful automatic rifle system by the end of the 19th century. The design is based on a pneumatic bolt with a side-swing bolt mechanism, which historically provided a semi-automatic rate of fire at a time when bolt-action rifles were still the primary front-line tool. The weapon is fed from a 5-, 10- or 25-round detachable magazine, which contributes to the weapon's repeat-fire nature and allows the operator to fire continuously from a constant supply of ammunition without having to manage bulky bolt handles.
The main caliber of the weapon is the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge of German origin.
The ZH-29 certainly had a traditional exterior design at the time and used a solid wood stock with a wooden fore stock. A ribbed aluminum section at the front is attached to the rifle in front of the wooden part to protect the shooter's hands from the heat of the barrel during repeated firing.
The receiver is metal and contains the necessary internal working parts. The trigger is located under the rear of the receiver and is protected by an elongated ring, while the stock is ergonomically designed to accommodate the shooter's dominant hand - within reach of the trigger assembly. The magazine well is located in front of the trigger group and protrudes only a short distance down from the receiver, reducing jamming. Sighting is via an iron assembly consisting of a hinged rear unit and a front post behind the muzzle.
Compared to many full-fledged service rifles of the time, the ZH-29 left good barrel clearance due to its design. The sling ring is installed under the shoulder rest and at the very front of the fork. The total weight is 10 pounds and the total length is 45 inches. The barrel is 21.5 inches long.
The muzzle velocity is 2,700 feet per second, giving the weapon long-range sonic penetration.
In practice, the ZH-29 was never accepted by many of the world armies evaluating the type in the 1930s. It was considered long and fairly heavy when it started to move to shorter and lighter rifles.
Additionally, the exposed barrel section did not allow for a clean bayonet mount, which many European powers still seek in their designs. However, the ZH-29's heavy mass makes it a very accurate launch platform and extremely tough on the battlefield - resulting in a fairly strong and reliable presence.
The rifle's repeat-fire characteristics also proved more capable than many bolt-action rifles on the front lines at the time - it could fire from a larger magazine than the widely used 5 rounds.
Aside from serving in Czechoslovakia (and then under the banner of Nazi Germany after the occupation of Czechoslovakia during WWII), the ZH-29 has hardly found a home around the globe. Foreign operators include Ethiopia, Taiwan and Thailand.
