History

The popularity of the fabled Israeli 9mm UZI submachine gun in the 1960s and 1970s inevitably prompted gun manufacturers to recreate its excellent local characteristics. For Taiwan, an island nation under constant threat of Chinese invasion, the Type 77 is the result.

In form and function, the Type 77 reproduces the famous capabilities of the Israeli submachine gun/submachine gun, providing the user with a perfectly compact and effective Personal Defense Weapon (PDW).

Design work on the Type 77 began around 1985, and mass production was carried out by the Xinghua Arsenal in Taiwan.

The design uses the same pistol grip/magazine for compactness and sports front and rear sights over the receiver. The charging handle is located in the very center of the weapon. The barrel protrudes only slightly from the frame, which keeps the weapon in a very compact shape. The skeletal stock is folded over the submachine gun frame, significantly reducing the overall length.

The trigger group is integrated as part of the pistol grip, completing a very robust design.

6.2 lbs total unladen/unladen weight, 24.02 inches total length, fully extended cord storage. The latter mass was reduced to just 13.19 inches when the stem collapsed. The barrel assembly is 8.46 inches long.

Internally, the Type 77 fires the widely accepted and proven German 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge using a 30 or 32 round detachable magazine. The action is recoil, and the rate of fire reaches 1,200 to 1,500 rounds per minute. Maximum effective range is less than 500 feet.

The Type 77 is reportedly still in service with the modern Republic of China (Taiwan) Army, demonstrating its worth to the armed forces.
