History of the Izhmash AK-9

The AK-9 is a modernized version of the iconic AK-47, originating from the 1940s, and is designed primarily for Russian special forces. In the 1990s, the AK series underwent updates with lightweight materials like plastic, resulting in the AK-9. It is based on the AK-47 design but differs from newer models like the AK-100 series, using a 9x39mm subsonic cartridge, which makes the AK-9 a suppressed weapon. The design work was primarily conducted by the Russian company Izhmash, and the rifle was created to meet Russian military requirements in 2006.

Externally, the AK-9 closely resembles classic AK series rifles with features like a sturdy stock, pistol grip, and a rectangular receiver. It has an integrated silencer on the barrel to reduce noise and uses a 9x39mm cartridge adapted from the 7.62x39mm rifle caliber, designed for close-quarters combat. Russian engineers claim it can penetrate modern ballistic armor and operates nearly silently, making it a suitable choice for special forces. The AK-9 is believed to have been designed around the turn of the century and introduced around 2007 or later.
