History of the Gwen and Campbell Carbines

The Gwyn & Campbell Carbine played a significant role during the Civil War as a small arms development issued to select Illinois cavalry regiments. Produced by the Cosmopolitan Arms Company in Hamilton, Ohio, and owned by Edward Gwyn and Abner C. Campbell, this .52 caliber, single-shot shock lance showcased design elements inspired by the early Metropolitan carbine. Given various names during its service, such as "Union carbine," "Monkeytail carbine," and "Grapevine carbine" due to its elegant loader tendrils, this carbine proved to be a reliable and acceptable weapon for cavalry units.

With its solid metal components fitted into a sturdy wooden frame, the Gwyn & Campbell Carbine featured a 20-inch round barrel assembly and was equipped with sights above the receiver and on the muzzle for improved long-range accuracy. Utilizing flax or paper cartridges filled with black powder and a .52 or .54 ball, the carbine relied on a gas leak at the breech for primary detonation. Notably, it was manufactured in two variants known as "Type I" and "Type II," each with distinct design differences on the trigger guard and hammer. Approximately 8,200 carbines were produced, with around 4,000 of each variant believed to have been made.

The Gwyn & Campbell Carbine found use beyond Illinois, being issued to troops in Arkansas, Kansas, Tennessee, Ohio, and Missouri. The carbine's service spanned from 1863 to 1864, and its production was facilitated through 13 contracts issued by the U.S. Department of Ordnance. While not without its limitations, this carbine stood as a reliable choice for cavalry during the Civil War, and its historical significance endures as a testament to the ingenuity and development of small arms technology during that era.
