History

The AC58 rifle grenade is a unique addition to infantry weaponry, enhancing the range of grenades by attaching them to the muzzle of rifles. Specifically exemplified by the Luchaire SA AC58 from the 1980s, an extension of the French FAMAS assault rifle, this projectile features a rocket-like design with a conical warhead, cylindrical fuselage, and finned tail. Primarily designed as an anti-tank weapon, it can effectively target vulnerable surfaces on modern main battle tanks, detonating upon impact through a simple fuze mechanism.

Two notable versions of the AC58 exist: Modele F1 and the more advanced Modele F2. The latter permits the use of live cartridges, eliminating the need for a blank cartridge and streamlining the firing process. Capable of penetrating armor up to 305 mm and boasting a combat range of 100 meters, the AC58 represents a versatile tool for infantry. Its application involves placement on the muzzle of rifles like the FAMAS, using a bullet trap for launching and arming, and it can pierce armor at an optimal angle of up to 350 mm.

In addition to the AC58, the French Army utilized the APAV40 series, a similar rifle grenade with a smaller diameter but comparable functionality. The AC58's official designation is Grenade à fusil antichar de 58 mm Mle F1 PAB. The weapon finds practical use in direct fire situations, with the FAMAS featuring a built-in aiming device for distances between 75 to 100 meters. Furthermore, the warhead of the AC58 is integrated into the Luchaire Wasp 58 individual antiarmour-assault weapon, showcasing its adaptability within military arsenals.
