RPC Fort Fort-17 History
The Fort-17 pistol, produced in Ukraine by RPC Fortress, is a modern firearm used primarily by Ukraine's Ministry of the Interior. This traditional semi-automatic metal pistol has been in service since 2004 and is notably deployed in the conflict in Donbass. Featuring a 9mm cartridge for accuracy, it operates with a double-action trigger and utilizes a 13-round magazine with a muzzle velocity of 325 meters per second. The pistol's dimensions are 180mm in length with a 95mm barrel, and it weighs either 810 grams or 680 grams. Customizable grip straps and an oversized trigger ring for gloved hands enhance its usability.
In 2020, various Fort-17 models are available, including the "Fort-17" for 9x18mm PM cartridges, "Fort-17 Kurz" for 9mm Kurz cartridges, "Fort-17 Kobra" for sport shooting with Makarov cartridges, and "Fort-17 Cordon" for indoor use with .22 Long Rifle rounds. Additionally, riot variants known as Fort-17R and Fort-17T are designed to fire rubber bullets for crowd control.
Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs is the primary operator of these pistols, with some sales to local police and security forces. In 2014, the Ukrainian army officially adopted the Fort-17 series. Interestingly, some of these pistols found their way to Russia before the Donbas conflict due to public exports until mid-2011, and were subsequently used against Ukraine in ongoing battles.
