History of the Arisaka Type 97

The Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) drew inspiration from European battlefield doctrines, resulting in a standardized sniper rifle. This came in the form of the bolt-action Type 38 Infantry Service Rifle, which became the "Type 97" when a 2.5x telescopic sight and monopod were added and the stock weight was reduced.

The series was launched in 1937, just in time for most of the fighting in World War II (1939-1945).

Apart from the above changes and modifications, the origins of Type 97 and Type 38 are not very different. One of the main limiting factors is the continued reliance on the 6.5x50mm Arisaka rifle cartridge, which is slightly underperforming compared to its European counterparts. The rest of the rifle is conventional in that it uses a manually operated bolt action system and is fed from an internal 5-round magazine (stored via a "stripping" clip).

The overall weight is 8.7 pounds, the overall length is 50 inches, and the barrel assembly is 31.4 inches long.

Type 97 production spanned from 1937 to the end of World War II in 1945, the series saw more combat action during the Chinese Civil War (1927-1936) (authorities were convinced that specialized Japanese snipers were needed element). Encountered German-trained Chinese snipers on the battlefield), the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953).

The rifle has proven itself in practice. Although the 6.5mm Arisaka rifle round is relatively weak in blocking, it is still lethal and has the added innate advantage that the muzzle flash is almost audible at range, making the sniper's position particularly difficult and difficult in bushes Hard to see or in jungle environment.
