History of the Siyavash SWS (Sniper Weapon System)
The Siyavash Sniper Weapon System (SWS) is an Iranian-made sniper rifle introduced in 2013. It resembles a traditional full stock sniper rifle, complete with a fore stock, pistol grip, and shoulder padding. The barrel is partially exposed, while a bipod assembly provides forward support during firing. The optics are positioned above the receiver for precise long-distance shots.
The Siyavash is essentially an Iranian version of the American Remington M40, utilizing a hand-operated bolt lever handle. It has a reported effective range of up to 800 meters and weighs around 14 pounds. The rifle uses a NATO 7.62x51mm cartridge and typically has a detachable five-round magazine.
Although the Siyavash doesn't introduce groundbreaking features, it offers the Iranian military a domestically produced sniper weapon based on proven systems. The American M40 has seen extensive combat service since the mid-1960s, including the Vietnam War and conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Limited production of the Siyavash SWS began in 2015.
