History
To circumvent the US 1989 ban on assault rifles, West Germany's Heckler & Koch took their HK 91, based on the HK 41 semi-automatic rifle, and redesigned/would The product was renamed the Sporting and Sighting Rifle, becoming the "HK 911", then the "HK SR9" (1990). Changes from the original include the loss of a separate pistol grip, flash suppressor and bayonet mount - a more common feature of assault weapons.
A shorter, lighter barrel was installed, and the number of magazines was limited to five rounds in 1994. Firepower is limited to semi-automatic weapons. Both wood and polymer (black) raw materials are eventually added to the product line.
The total weight of the rifle is approximately 11 pounds. Dimensions include 42.5" overall length and 19.7" long barrel. The weapon is loaded with 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges, fired from a 5- or 20-round detachable magazine (using a straight box design) through spring-loaded two-post lugs. The action is still the HK reel delayed recoil OS with semi-auto fire capability. Aiming is by standard ferrous components or optics mounted above the receiver in a typical fashion.
A long barrel front provides a landing area for the auxiliary hand below the barrel, which protrudes a short distance in front of the assembly. The weapon uses the traditional HK selector switch near the shooter's thumb, which is color-coded for quick identification.
Developed two main variants of SR9 - SR9T ("Target") and SR9TC ("Target Race"). The Target model features an integrated thumb hole in the shoulder rest of the MSG90 rifle and borrows the precision trigger group of the PSG-1 sniper rifle.
The Target Competition model adds the PSG-1's adjustable shoulder rest unit while retaining many of the elements of the Target model.
