History of the 2B14 Podnos
The 2B14 "Podnos" was an 82mm Soviet battlefield mortar. The system has a traditional layout and functionality that has been in use since the 1980s. Design work was carried out in 1983 and serial production was carried out at the Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Plant.
The system has been deployed since its inception and has been used in conflicts such as the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989), the Syrian Civil War (since 2011), and the Ukrainian-Russian War (since 2014).
The mortar consists of typical mortar components: launch tube, bipod support assembly and recoil plate. The entire system weighs 92.3 pounds and requires a crew of four for optimal function. The launch tube is rated for a 6-pound, 82 mm (3.2 in) caliber high-explosive (HE) projectile, and a trained crew can fire indirect fire at 30 rounds per minute. Mounting hardware allows 45 - 85 degrees of added span and +/- 8 degrees of inherent lateral. Anything beyond that would require a complete relocation of the mortar system.
Effective range is up to 2.65 miles.
Weapons can be transported using available 2F510 series 2x1 wheel assemblies, or dedicated powered vehicles such as GAZ-66 series military 4x4 wheeled trucks or similar wheeled or tracked solutions.
In addition to service in the Soviet Union, the mortar was purchased by the armed forces of Georgia, Malaysia, Syria and Ukraine, and used by Lebanese militia elements. Unlike other Soviet Cold War weapons, the 2B14 series did not gain widespread global acceptance.
The former Soviet mortars were absorbed into the newly formed Russian army after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and it is believed that fewer than 300 are still in circulation with the Russian Armed Forces, while about 3,000 are still in storage (available on demand. )consider).
The Ukrainian army actively used its 2B14 system against Russian troops and separatist supporters in the war in the Donbass in the east of the country. New Russian insurgents are known to have also used these weapons against Ukrainian forces.
