The FB Radom MAG is a military pistol product that originated in Poland in the mid-1990s. At its heart is the compact, highly traditional 9mm pistol of the post-Soviet era.
It entered the design phase from 1993 to 1994, and entered service and production at the Luznik munitions plant in 1995, where it remained in operation until 2000. The pistol was handed down from the Polish army, mainly equipped with members of the Polish border guards and local prison security forces, while a small stockpile was supplied to Lithuania in the mid-2000s.
The MAG series is notable in the country as it deviates from the Soviet-era 9x18mm Makarov pistol cartridge - the MAG instead relies on the tried and tested 9x19mm Parabellum German pistol cartridge, preferred to the West date.
Like other firearms that originated in Poland in the 1990s, the MAG pistol was developed locally to meet local military needs. The Polish Army was looking for a modern successor to replace the mixed stockpile of Soviet pistols in service at the time. The new semi-automatic pistol will better connect Polish combatants with their Western counterparts across Europe.
This pistol was designed by Marian Grishkiewicz.
The process produces a powerful sidearm weighing 1,230 grams and measuring 200mm in overall length. The barrel assembly measures 115mm. Internally, the action relies on the principle of short recoil with locked recoil. The muzzle velocity is 1,170 feet per second and the range is 25 meters.
The long-range firing section is aided by a fixed front blade and rear notched iron sight arrangement. Feed comes from a 15-round detachable magazine at the bottom of the grip. Inside the barrel is chrome plated for durability. The automatic striker safety is also in play.
Visually, this weapon impresses with its checkered grip pattern, double-ribbed slides, and easy-to-operate controls. The ejection port is on the right side of the frame, and the controls are on the left (including the unlock lever). The hammer is slightly exposed beyond the back of the frame. The rear sight is located directly in front of the rear of the frame, and the front sight is above the muzzle.
The recoil spring is mounted under the barrel as usual. The ring is solid and protects the smooth curved trigger assembly. The magazine release button is located near the trigger.
By 1994 the pilot pistol was ready for testing and the final product borrowed several elements from existing proven designs to create an excellent frame for the new pistol - especially inherited from the Browning and SIG pistols feature. Serial production started in 1995 under the name "MAG-95". However, despite its overall reliability, sturdiness, accuracy and balance, this pistol was too heavy and too large for what the Polish army could hold. In response, the weapon was modified in 1996 to the lighter "MAG-98", which used allowable sliding and recoil buffers to reduce weight.
Once again, the Polish Army did not like this pistol and adopted the "WIST-94" semi-automatic pistol (described in detail elsewhere on this site). This ended up leaving the series with few clients and no major high-profile endorsements - a genre that the Polish Border Prison/Security Forces all cater to.
Before the end, the MAG series produced another variant - the "MAG-98C" - which was designed for the sports shooting/competition shooting market. This model offers useful adjustable iron sights as well as a deep 20-round detachable magazine to reduce reload frequency.
In 2008, the MAG-08 came online as a modernized version of the MAG-95. This shape features a small section of Picatinny rail in front of the trigger ring for mounting laser sights, flashlights and other tactical accessories.
