History
The SNT Motiv K17 is a South Korean 5.56 mm special operations weapon developed to replace the K1A after about 45 years of service. It was selected under South Korea's Type 1 Special Operations Submachine Gun programme and entered initial military fielding in 2026.
The K17 was developed for special operations units and other personnel who require a compact individual weapon. Its design combines a short-stroke gas-piston operating system with ambidextrous controls, an adjustable stock, and modern accessory mounting interfaces.
The Republic of Korea Armed Forces began receiving production-standard K17 weapons in 2026. The initial fielding forms part of a phased programme that is intended to replace K1A weapons across both special-mission and conventional units.
Development and selection
SNT Motiv developed the K17 as part of the domestically funded Type 1 Special Operations Submachine Gun programme. The weapon completed military testing and received a final assessment that it was suitable for combat. SNT Motiv said the design also reflects experience gained from licensed production of the US-developed M16 family and from production of South Korea's indigenous K-series small arms.
The K17 was configured for environments including urban combat and airborne operations. SNT Motiv optimized its barrel length and overall configuration for these missions while retaining compatibility with existing military maintenance arrangements. The manufacturer also introduced revised production processes intended to improve barrel durability and modified several components to improve reliability.
Production and fielding
On 21 July 2026, SNT Motiv announced that deliveries of production-standard K17 weapons had begun and marked the shipment of the first weapons from its headquarters in Busan. KDefenseNews reported that approximately 1,500 weapons were scheduled for delivery during 2026.
In late August 2026, footage released by South Korea's state-owned Defense Media Agency showed the K17 being issued to special-mission units and used during special forces training. On 7 September, Janes reported that the Republic of Korea Army had begun fielding the weapon.
Production figures are reported with slightly different wording. Janes states that about 14,000 weapons are scheduled for production in 2027 after the initial 1,500 produced in 2026, while KDefenseNews describes the 2027 quantity as more than 14,000. SPARTANAT summarizes the programme as approximately 15,000 weapons supplied in phases during 2026 and 2027. These accounts indicate a programme of roughly fifteen thousand weapons, although the published totals are not expressed identically.
Design
The K17 is chambered for 5.56 mm ammunition and uses a short-stroke gas-piston operating system. It has a rear-mounted charging handle and a forward assist. The fire selector and magazine release are ambidextrous, allowing operation from either side of the weapon.
The weapon uses a free-floating, heavy-profile forged barrel. According to an SNT Motiv official cited by Janes, the barrel is approximately 1.5 inches longer than that of the K1A. The longer barrel increases the stated effective range from about 300 m for the K1A to 400 m for the K17.
A five-position telescopic buttstock allows the overall configuration to be adjusted for the operator. The weapon feeds from a detachable polymer box magazine. Janes reports that the handguard provides Picatinny rail and M-LOK attachment interfaces, while KDefenseNews describes a four-sided Picatinny rail arrangement for optical sights and other mission equipment.
The K17 also incorporates a three-round-burst firing mode. Reports describing the weapon's adoption state that this mode was added to improve fire control and ammunition management. SNT Motiv retained a high degree of parts commonality with existing weapons so that the Republic of Korea Armed Forces could continue using established maintenance infrastructure.
Operational history
The first production K17 weapons were issued in 2026 to special-mission units and were shown in special forces training. The replacement programme is intended to extend beyond special operations forces. K1A weapons are also used by artillery personnel, armoured vehicle crews, ammunition handlers, fire direction personnel, medics, signallers, military police, and company-level commanders, and the K17 is planned to replace them progressively in these roles.
The K17 may also influence future South Korean rifle development. SNT Motiv has stated that experience accumulated through the Type 1 and Type 2 special operations submachine gun programmes will support its participation in a planned next-generation Korean service rifle programme. This remains a future programme rather than an operational K17 variant.
