History
The "Yasir" is an Iranian unarmed, replica, light, economical, long-range unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on Boeing's "ScanEagle" series (detailed elsewhere on this site). The Iranian product is manufactured by the Iranian Aviation Industry Organization (IAIO) and developed based on a ScanEagle prototype that was lost in Iranian airspace in December 2012.
After the Iranians exhausted its usefulness, the only specimen captured was given to Russian air force commanders visiting Iran. Yasir is believed to be on active duty with Iranian and Hezbollah forces, flying over Syria (since 2011) in the ongoing Syrian civil war.
Boeing subsidiary Insitu's original ScanEagle first flew in June 2002 and was introduced to the U.S. Armed Forces in 2005 (first to the U.S. Navy, and has since been used by all services). It currently (2017) counts various global operators from Afghanistan and Australia to the UK (like ScanEagle RM.1) and Yemen. Various navies around the world use this type of warship, from where drones are able to be launched (via a catapult) and recovered at sea via a (relatively simple recovery system).
Special forces also prefer this series.
The ScanEagle's primary role is reconnaissance on the battlefield, it is capable of flying to altitudes of up to 20,000 feet, and has a mission endurance window of approximately 24 hours. Top speed is 92 mph (but cruises closer to 70 mph). Power comes from a 1.5 hp, 2-stroke, 3-watt piston engine that drives a two-bladed propeller in a thruster arrangement.
Its optics consist of high-resolution day/night cameras and thermal imaging support.
