History of the Boeing Insitu ScanEagle 2

"ScanEagle 2" is a further development of Boeing's Insitu "ScanEagle" unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) family (detailed elsewhere on this website). The new model features a new heavy-oil engine for improved reliability and an expanded product line to improve service in the commercial market.

So far, the ScanEagle series has served the world's major military forces such as the US military and special forces, and has achieved good results. It is also used in some commercial fields, such as the oil industry.

Compared to the original, the ScanEagle 2 has a larger head assembly to better support mission optics and sensor equipment. The payload limit has also been increased. The tubular fuselage was retained, as was the main aircraft with swept wings.

The new engine, supplied by Orbital, is located in the stern of the design, driving a three-bladed propeller assembly in a "propeller" configuration. The tip of the main wing aircraft also has a vertical tail.

The launch of the UAS is via a catapult, which allows operations from fixed locations, vehicles and warships as small as patrol boats.

November 2018 - Malaysia deploys its first all-drone squadron. The force relies on ScanEagle 2 provided by the United States through the Maritime Security Initiative.
