History
In 2009, India's HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.) and Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC)/Ilyushin announced a formal joint venture to successfully design, develop and develop a new medium turbofan-powered transport aircraft product , to supply aging military transport lines serving in the air service of both powers. The aircraft, designated "IL-214 MTA" (Multipurpose Transport Aircraft), has state-of-the-art systems, capabilities and structures.
However, the deal has failed since early 2016, with the subsequent announcement that India would no longer participate in the new Ilyushin project. Instead, UAC tracks the company itself under the designation "IL-276," an aircraft aimed at the Russian Air Force as a "bridge" between their modified IL-76 gravity lift fleet and the more modest transport aircraft designed IL -112V series.
Currently (2018), IL-276 will consist of a crew of three, including two pilots (sitting side by side in the cockpit) and a mission engineer/loading supervisor. The aircraft has a payload capacity of up to 44,000 pounds and is capable of carrying up to 150 crew members as well as medical stretchers with support staff and conventional cargo pallets.
Power comes from 2 Aviadvigatel PD-14M turbofan engines, each with 34,392 pounds of thrust, mounted under each wing's main plane - which is mounted high on the side of the fuselage to provide excellent ground clearance. The tail uses a T-shaped multi-hop tail, while the flight deck is traditionally positioned towards the short nose cone. As usual, an electric loading ramp in the rear is mounted below the rear unit for unobstructed access to the interior cargo area. Current (2018) dimensions include a barrel length of 123.7 feet, a wingspan of 116.5 feet, and a height of up to 42.5 feet. Maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) was set at 158,733 lbs.
Estimated performance specs include a top speed of 540 mph and a cruising speed of 500 mph. It is said to have a range of up to 1,245 miles and a ferry range of up to 4,535 miles. The aircraft has a service ceiling of 43,000 feet.
The first flight of the IL-276 prototype is scheduled for sometime in 2023, with delivery to the Russian Air Force tentatively scheduled for 2025.
