Ilyushin IL-106 (Slon) / (PAK VTA) History
The Ilyushin IL-106 "Slon" (translated as "elephant") was a planned super-heavy strategic jet - Powered military transport in service with the Russian Air Force. The service is seeking a state-of-the-art replacement for its aging Cold War-era fleet of Antonov An-124 Ruslans currently operated by the Air Force. 12 remain in active service (2020), with another 14 such large aircraft in reserve.
Modernization enables active fleets to survive on new battlefields.
The An-124 platform was built in the USSR by Antonov when Ukraine fell under the Soviet flag. Today, Russia is at war with its neighbors after invading and taking over Crimea.
The Russian Ilyushin Group, which has a long history in the field of large aircraft, was tasked with designing a replacement for the An-124.
Little information is currently available on the ongoing IL-106 program. The design can carry over 180 tonnes of cargo in the large internal cargo hold.
Four Aviadvigatel PD-35 non-afterburning engines were selected for enhanced performance, providing a range of 4,350 miles in full form at a top speed of 530 mph.
The project originally originated under the name PAK TA, but later evolved into PAK VTA. ("Future aviation complex for military transport aircraft"). IL-106, once used for a potential Ilyushin airliner, has been repurposed for a new transport aircraft.
Currently, construction of the prototype is expected to begin in 2020, with the first flight tentatively scheduled for no later than 2026. Service entry is estimated in 2028 or later.
