History of Kamov Ka-27 (spiral)

The Kamov Ka-27 Helix naval helicopter was developed as a direct successor to the aging Kamov Ka-25 family in service with the Soviet Navy - both were primarily used to fulfill an anti-ship (AS) role, but were eventually used in Expanded to perform other duties as needed, including Search and Rescue (SAR), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), and general surface transportation of Soviet Navy ships. As seen on previous Kamov helicopter designs, the Ka-27 does not have a traditional tail rotor, but is powered by two counter-rotating three-bladed main rotors, one on top of the other - an action that offsets one rotor The resulting torque is mounted on top of the other.

The Ka-27 had the same overall dimensions as its predecessor, the Ka-25, which meant that the ship's onboard storage was hardly modified to accommodate the Ka-27 after taking on the Soviet naval role. Helix is ??operated by three standard operators, including the pilot, a "tactical coordinator" and a surface weapons coordinator.

There's also seating for up to 16 passengers, which makes the Ka-27 Helix well-equipped for transport when it's so well-equipped inside (Ka-29TB).

The Ka-27 first flew on December 24, 1973, and was officially launched in 1982, with some 267 prototypes eventually realized. These later served in the Soviet and Russian navies, as well as in the Ukrainian and Indian navies overseas.

An offshoot of the Ka-27 became the modern Ka-31, which arrived in 1995 and assumed the Airborne Early Warning (AEW) role.

A variant of the Ka-27 led by the prototype Ka-25-2. The Ka-27K ASW production model Ka-27PL ("Helix-A") was produced as an ASW prototype. The Ka-27PS ("Helix-D") became a dedicated SAR model, while the Ka-27PV was its armed form. PL was exported as Ka-28.

The Ka-29TB was designed as an attack transport for 16 passengers. The civilian market form became the Ka-32, and various sub-variants of the brand were subsequently released.

Military (non-Soviet/Russian) operators of the Ka-27 include Algeria, China, India, Portugal, Syria, Ukraine, Vietnam, South Korea and the former Yugoslavia. Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, Japan and Portugal all recognize civilian operators.

The base Ka-27 is powered by 2 Isotov TV3-117V turboshaft engines, 2,230 hp each. Performance includes a top speed of 170 mph, a range cruise speed of 130 mph, a range of 610 miles and a service ceiling of up to 16,400 feet.

Typical armament is 1 torpedo, the helicopter can also fire depth charges and sonobuoys if required.
