History
Before and during World War II, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the main fighter of the Luftwaffe, deployed on all fronts where the German war machine was raging. Once introduced, the aircraft immediately became the most advanced and powerful combat platform in the world, rendering all previous models (mainly biplanes in design) obsolete. The Bf 109 became a symbol of national pride in a resurgent Germany, led by the charismatic Adolf Hitler, who rose through German politics and eventually consolidated his power and brought the entire country under his brutal control. During the war, the Bf 109 was in so many numbers that it bore the brunt of all air combat by the Luftwaffe - combat operations in the Spanish Civil War, Invasion of Europe, Battle of Britain, Battle of the Mediterranean, Battle of Northern Africa, Western Front and the Eastern Front. It was supported by the arrival of the equally excellent Focke-Wulf Fw 190, but throughout its wartime career it was used heavily and in many variants.
Amazingly, after the war ended in 1945, the model continued to be produced for a decade and was even chosen as the main fighter for the growing Israeli Air Force. One of the most famous fighter jets of its time, the Bf 109 was respected by all quarters, taking many aces among those who flew it and earning it a place in military history as one of the greatest aircraft designs of all time.
Even with the arrival of the newer Fw 190 series fighters, the Bf 109 production line continues unabated and in widespread use.
Design Messerschmitt Bf 109
The design of the Bf 109 is credited to German engineers Willy Messerschmitt and Walter Rethel. After the First World War, Germany's war machine was torn down by the victors, just as Hitler came to power, the military was preoccupied with "correcting the wrongs" of the embarrassing Versailles Treaty for a day, placing all the blame on going to war only against Germany. The German Aviation Ministry (RLM) wants to equip its Luftwaffe with Germany's first modern monoplane fighter to replace the outdated and obsolete Arado Ar 68 and Heinkel He models.
51 series. Both were biplanes, obviously influenced by the world wars decades later. Both managed biplane layouts, open-air cockpits, and fixed landing gear, which are of little use in modern warfare. The RLM requirements were communicated to interested parties in the summer of 1934.
So far, the Messerschmitt Group has recently developed the Bf 108 "Typhoon" as a sport and touring aircraft. The aircraft features an all-metal skinned structure, an enclosed four-seat crew compartment, fully retractable landing gear and low-positioned monoplane wings. It first flew in 1934 and launched in 1935, setting multiple endurance flight records. Over time, it also served as a liaison role for the Luftwaffe as well as personal transport for personnel.
This will eventually yield about 885 examples.
With this in mind, Messerschmitt focused on the strong inherent qualities of their successful Bf 108 series to produce a new German fighter jet. These include an all-metal skinned construction, as well as an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear and cantilevered monoplane wings.
The goal was to fit the most powerful engine available at the time into the smallest possible airframe for great speed and great handling. The aircraft would be powered by a 610-horsepower Junkers Jumo 210A inline engine, which was developed in-house at the time.
While Messerschmitt struggled to submit the application, other well-known companies were also involved in trying to meet the RLM requirements. These include the powerhouses Arado, Heinkel and Focke-Wulf.
As a result, Messerschmitt's chances of winning a potentially lucrative arms contract are very slim. Each of the companies involved was tested with the Messerschmitt fighter jets and all were evaluated against the stated requirements.
Messerschmitt completed its prototype, although the scheduled Junkers Jumo engine was not ready. Ironically, it used a 695-horsepower British Rolls-Royce Kestrel V inline engine.
The original Bf 109 prototype flew for the first time on May 29, 1935 - proving that the design was very solid, even excellent. The second prototype is the one receiving the scheduled Junkers Jumo 210A series engine. After a formal evaluation of the various systems, the German authorities focused on the submissions of the Heinkel He 112 and the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and the Messerschmitt's design finally prevailed and the aviation legacy was officially born.
The Bf 109 was introduced into service with the Luftwaffe in 1937. Meanwhile, work in the UK created the Bf 109's main professional rival in the Supermarine Spitfire - a classic in its own right, with a modern launch a year later.
Name Messerschmitt Bf 109
Note that the name chosen for the aircraft uses the "BF" designation. This was adopted by the first manufacturing plant - the "Bayerische Flugzeugwerke" in Bavaria - to produce this type.
Therefore, the full name "Messerschmitt Bf 109" is sometimes incorrectly named "Messerschmitt Me 109" in some publications. Likewise, the Messerschmitt Bf 110 twin-engine, two-seater heavy fighter followed the same designated route.
Pre-production and Messerschmitt Bf 109B
Messerschmitt was commissioned to produce ten pre-production aircraft based on their designs, designated Bf 109V-1 to Bf 109V-10. Throughout its development, the Bf 109 has continually changed its engine and weapon configuration, leaving a bewildering array of production brands to follow, and even sub-variants from these major brands. The Bf 109A designation is mainly used as a pre-production version. This provided the way for the first official production model, the Bf 109B ("Bertha"), to appear in February 1937.
That summer, the German government sent several prototypes, under the banner of the Luftwaffe "Condor Legion", to fight on the side of the Kuomintang in the Spanish Civil War. The war proved to be the perfect testing ground for new military advancements related to the German Army and Luftwaffe. The tactics associated with the new German fighter jets were improved, while pilots and war planners gained valuable experience in a wartime environment, a process that would serve them well in the coming world war.
The Bf 109 was clearly the best fighter in the Spanish conflict and was considered the best in the world at the time.
Messerschmitt Bf 109C and Bf 209D
Development of the improved Bf 109 model continues as production facilities begin production of the new model. In November 1937, a fuselage with a 1,650-horsepower engine set a new airspeed record of over 379 miles per hour. This undoubtedly played a very good role for the German propaganda machine in China, demonstrating the technical advantages and originality of Germany.
Several other public demonstrations of the inherent power of the new Bf 109 were recorded at this time as war rumours spread across Europe.
The Bf 109B was eventually followed by the Bf 109C ("Clara"), but both were still largely in pre-production to help resolve issues in the design. This version gets a new weapon configuration that lacks the earlier markings. Following the C model, the Bf 109D ("Dora") equipped with the new Daimler-Benz DB 600A series in-line engine, it is also the C and D models that paved the way for the appearance of the first batch of quantitative models this year.
109E ("Emile").
Messerschmitt Bf 109E Emil
The Bf 109E is equipped with a 1,050 hp Daimler-Benz DB 601 inline piston engine. The production Bf 109E-1 had 2 x 7.92mm machine guns mounted on the hood and 2 x 7.92mm machine guns on the wings. The E-1B introduced fighter-bomber capability to the series. The E-2 is a limited edition brand with 1 cannon in the nose, 2 cannons in the wings, and 2 machine guns in the hood.
The E-3 had 2 machine guns on the hood and 2 cannons on each wing. The brand's total production was 1,276 servings. Next, the E-4 came online and used a new set of 20mm cannons on the wings. The E-5 and E-6 marks turned out to be reconnaissance marks, with photographic equipment installed behind the cockpit.
The E-7 introduced provisions for a fuel drop tank to increase the restrictions on earlier models. The brand can also be used as a fighter-bomber, increasing its tactical value. Engine power ranges from 1,100 hp to 1,175 hp, depending on engine tuning.
The E-8 is a sub-variant of the long-range fighter, while the E-9 is another reconnaissance version with drop tank support and a 1,100 hp DB 601A engine.
Invasion of Europe
The first available E model was completed in early 1939. In September of the same year, the German army invaded Poland and World War II officially began. With over 1,000 Bf 109 fighter jets in stock, the number soon outnumbered all available Polish types. From there, the fighter was deployed to lead air strikes against small, ill-prepared enemies in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Norway. The only real threat to the Bf 109's early air superiority was the new French Dewoitine D.520 fighters, but there were not enough of them.
Over time, half of Europe was under German control. Hitler then envisioned the conquest of England across the Channel and prepared for the eventual invasion of Sea Lions.
The latest version of the Bf 109 has been delivered to the veteran Luftwaffe now within range of Northern France - the British Isles.
Battle of Britain
In the summer of 1940, the Luftwaffe returned to action, beginning the Battle of Britain. Air superiority will be a key factor in sinking the heart of the British Empire, and the Bf 109 is sure to play a key role in the upcoming battle. On the other side are the capable monoplane Hawker Hurricane and the only true Bf 109 counter-attacker - the Supermarine Spitfire. The Bf 109 was originally used in dedicated fighter jets and was used with great success against RAF aircraft.
However, the limitations of the two-seater twin-engine Messerschmitt Bf 110 heavy fighters proved insufficient for bomber escort duties, and the mandatory use of Bf 109s for the same mission - hampered their effectiveness as dedicated fighters. The RAF's air doctrine also improved over time, and the unwavering determination of the British people only made things worse for the Germans. The key to the British's survival was the island's efficient radar and communications network, which alerted waiting RAF air bases to the approaching German swarm.
At this point the tactical advantage of the Bf 109 was fading as more and more restricted roles were created. As for the Bf 109 and Spitfire, engineers on both sides of the Channel have been looking to improve each other by continually improving their respective series - a throwback to the days of World War I, when the technology produced new aircraft only a few months old . Soon to be out of date. In the end, the Germans lost the Battle of Britain, and Hitler shelved his grand invasion plans indefinitely. The main Bf 109 model for combat remained the Bf 109E series, and was further improved with subsequent sub-variants in a short period of time.
The Bf 109E-7 is powered by a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz DB 601N 12-cylinder in-line V engine producing 1,200 hp with a 1 x 20mm cannon in the propeller hub and 2 x 7.92mm machine guns in the propeller hub. The propeller hubs are armed with fairings and 2 x 7.9mm machine guns on the leading edge of the wing. The Battle of Britain ended with the defeat of the mighty Luftwaffe on October 31, 1940. Hitler is now turning his attention to the Soviet Union to the east - where German leaders generally believe a battle will not last more than a few weeks. The E variant will continue to be the main adversary against the RAF Kitty Hawk (P-40 Warhawk) in the North African theater.
After the arrival of the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 in August 1941, the improved F-type (detailed below) had limited performances at the Straits Theatre.
Messerschmitt Bf 109F "Friedrich"
An improved version - although originally presented in October 1940 - was delayed in mass production until the spring of 1941, and this was the Bf 109F ("Friedrich"). A new, more powerful inline piston engine (Daimler-Benz DB 601E/N) was installed and aerodynamic improvements were made around the fuselage to better simplify the design. The tail wheel is now fully retractable, improving airflow under the tail and adding a new large spinner as a cover above the three-blade propeller assembly. The wings have been redesigned with rounded tips to support improved edge airflow, and new ailerons and high-lift devices have been added to improve overall handling. Weapons include 2 x 7.92mm machine guns mounted on the fairing and a cannon fired through the propeller hub.
Testing of the F model took place before mass production began in the second half of 1940. Like its predecessor, the Bf 109 brand, the F-Type has its fair share of sub-variants, weapon layouts and engine appointments.
Most historical observers would mark this as the best all-around Bf 109 fighter development - undoubtedly a major evolutionary step for the breed. The F type also gave birth to lightly armed reconnaissance versions (Bf 109F-5 and F-6). Shared sub-variants F-0 to F-6.
