The Messerschmitt Me 321 'Gigant' ('Gigant') was developed as a large transport aircraft to complement the operations of the German Airborne Forces in response to the inevitable invasion of Britain following the fall of France in May-June 1940. This guy is a huge, hulking beast that lifts off on the propulsion of a "tugboat" aircraft and eventually lands on its own power. The design attempted to achieve a rather optimistic concept, neither a failure nor a success in terms of its wartime achievements.

After the fall of France, Adolf Hitler turned his attention to Britain, an island nation across the English Channel - leading to the "Battle of Britain" in the summer of 1940. The determination of the British people to save the country from Hitler's plans through "Operation Sea Lion" "Conducted a land invasion, which was ultimately postponed indefinitely. If a land invasion was launched, it was stipulated that the operation would be a typical German operation - and that thousands of airborne troops would be required to lay the initial foundation for the subsequent land battle - which would have to be done as planned The operation can be replenished in large quantities from the air. By October 1940, however, the Luftwaffe was under the control of the RAF and the Royal Navy, and Hitler delayed the invasion - the Battle of Britain marked the first real defeat of the Luftwaffe in a European campaign. In any case, the German authorities did not turn a blind eye to their logistical shortcomings and made specific demands for such a large air glider transport.

The method involves the use of large towed gliders that can transport personnel and tanks to the operating room.

The first operation of the Me 321 glider took place on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. As the German offensive progressed, it became increasingly important to deploy much-needed equipment for advancing troops. The Me 321 could be used to transport ammunition, supplies, vehicles, artillery, and even "pack beasts" for towing artillery - the latter being necessary due to the muddy nature of the Soviet terrain in spring, which proved to be invaluable to Germany People are surprisingly prohibitive for tracked vehicles.

Operationally, German authorities were neither satisfied nor disappointed with the early results of the Me 321, an aircraft that was able to perform as advertised, but at the same time it lacked tactical range and self-sustaining characteristics. So the situation remains that the Me 321 should ultimately run on its own power. Messerschmitt was sent back to work to build the new powered Me 321, and their last unpowered Me 321 glider was delivered in early 1942. By this time, however, all Me 321s had been withdrawn from the Eastern Front in preparation for the invasion of the strategically important island of Malta in the Mediterranean.

These Me 321s would have been towed from the development of the He 111Z, but insufficient numbers of the latter forced war planners to remove the Me 321s from such services. In November 1942, Me 321 gliders were called to resupply German ground forces in North Africa, but the giants proved extremely vulnerable to British fighters.

A total of about 200 Me 321s were delivered (100 x Me 321A and 100 x Me 321B production models), with production from June 1941 to April 1942.

In 1943, Me 321 was expected to use it again and return to the Eastern Front. German troops were fighting against Soviet troops, which had started to gain momentum thanks to tenacious toughness, favorable weather conditions (from a Soviet perspective), and newer weapons.

One such use was for the Me 321 to resupply the besieged German forces in Stalingrad, but such resupply would not have been possible for a complex Me 321 operation without a combat airfield available for landing. This abruptly ended the Me 321 glider's tenure, as a new self-propelled version was being developed - which would become the Me 323 "Gigant" of a similar range.

Two Me 321 prototypes served as the basis for two different Me 323 prototypes, which became the four-engine "Me 323 V1" and the six-engine "Me 323 V2" - detailed elsewhere on this site. The German authorities ultimately chose the latter because of its inherent strength.

Two versions of the Messerschmitt freighter, the Me 321 and the upcoming Me 323, received the "Gigant" ("Giant") moniker for fairly obvious reasons.
